The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

 Abandon the Delta protocol? Good heavens no...

Those are the three alloys the EDC is being made in. Those alloys get a heat treat (obviously) and the 3V will most certainly get the Delta protocol. The D2 gets an optimized HT as well, and we're working on optimizing a HT for 4V this winter.

I was also surprised as your posts were stating 3V as opposed to Delta 3V so I was just making sure. Thank you.

Nathan,

Can't help but ask.

If you plan to release the EDC in several alloys, will you modify the design to optimize it for the specific steel making each a variant or will it be identical other than the alloy chosen?

Thanks and hope this isn't annoying.

I will tweak the heat treat for a material for a particular application, but I won't generally modify a design for a material, but instead choose an appropriate material for a design. Otherwise the tail is wagging the dog. There are exceptions, of course.

D3V is a versatile material, and with some tweaks can be used in a lot of applications. D2 lacks the edge durability and gross toughness to be a great choice in a chopper but is a reasonable drop-in on a small thin knife and has some cool properties. Right now 4V is a bit of a wildcard (call it an educated guess). But all three alloys should work well with the EDC without changing the EDC design.

I think I see what's going on here... I'm being induced to "need" all three versions!!

Can't get a sales thread opened up on this soon enough, if you ask me.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but, do you prefer raspberry or strawberry preserves?

Or are you one of those lingonberry enthusiasts?

Thanks.

Nathan, when do you foresee putting up a preorder for the EDC like you did for the FK's? my luck on the sale threads has been dismal
Thanks
And hope you are a raspberry fan

I hope to do an EDC preorder sale this January once the Field Knives are all done.

And hope you are a raspberry fan

I don't put preserves on my toast. Butter, sometimes honey, and maybe some cupcake sprinkles if I can find where Jo hides them :D...

The following is purely self serving, but any chance that EDC preorder could get opened up before Christmas? See... I have convinced the home budget committee that I only need one present/stocking stuffer this year - a CPK EDC. I'm guessing a few pre-Christmas Christmas present orders might happen if you did.

Hey, maybe CPK gift cards!

It's not impossible, but I can't force the timing. Things need to be at a certain place first.

I know it is a ways out, but have you given any thought to a locking mechanism for the folder?

Nathan,
Is the next sale for LC's going to be the last one for awhile?

No, I'll have more in December and January and probably in Atlanta. We're also starting milling bevels on the next run of EDC today which should yield work starting in December. Then I'm "going off line" for a little while to do development work on the new survival knife (needs a different name to avoid confusion with Survive Knives) and unrelated work on a heat treat for 4V.

the new survival knife (needs a different name to avoid confusion with Survive Knives)

CPK One (1 knife tool)
CPK DIAK (do it all knife)
CPK SAS (survive any/all situation)
CPK Bear (NOT the animal)
CPK Subsist (survive synonym)
CPK Linger (survive synonym)

I know these aren't that great but hopefully they get the ball rolling and maybe someone reading will get an idea that will lead to the name.

Nathan before I pose my question: I have observed your exemplary blade design & production (sheathes excepted). I have a basic understanding of the satisfaction you must feel in the creation of 'the form' and it's very warm reception and exceptional performance.
I see your blades not so much distributed, as injected into the veins of appreciative junkies. I have sold a state of the art tool I designed for 15 years and it gets used in thousands of pharmacies dozens of times a day. Not a collectible! (except my sister has one).

So my question is: Do you experience frustration that so many of your blades are locked up, their achieved 'ownership high' replacing their usefulness? Do you long to produce a 'Model T' blade in such numbers that it competes with the mainstream and achieves widespread usage? I am a user of many tools; not a collector but I can appreciate a desire to collect. I just can't stop myself using them!

The collective eco-system of this forum loves you just the way you are and with good reason. How do you see the future? OK that's two questions..........
