The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Nathan, any chance I could get some different scales for my field knife, some with more grip when bloody?

Extra micarta scales can be bought from Jo for $25 and you can request unbuffed. They're not real pretty, but they have more grip. Alternatively you can sand your scales with 300 grit sandpaper for more grip.

Those unbuffed micarta scales Nate mentioned are really rough and grippy when new. If you haven't tried them yet, you will probably like them. In addition to hitting them with sandpaper, if you have access to a bead blaster, you can remove them from the knife and blast them. Just do the exteriors.

Dear Nathan, Standard78 has been trying to reach Jo on PM regarding (the invoicing of) my second of the CPK-FK preorders which I have transferred to him. Where and why are you hiding Mrs. Carothers for today? ;) :p

P.S. apparently after posting nearly 3000 messages in the last 2+ years, Standard78 still is struggling to get the hang of the PM system. LOLzzz :D

Nathan,
Any issue with sharpening a Light Chopper on a Wicked Edge Sharpener at 20 degrees per side ?

Thanks

Nate & Lorien, aside the SK, do you have any other concrete plans for any new knives or even to revisit older models not currently produced? Or are all plans only thoughts & ideas for now?

Delta 3V should be sharpened with abrasives (not burnished on a steel) manually (not ground under power). If done under power, it needs low speed and flood coolant. It should not be power stropped, run on a buffer or sharpened with paper wheels. The structures responsible for its fine edge stability are compromised at temperatures below 500F, which is easy to exceed at the apex of the cutting edge (the bit that cuts) without even knowing it, when sharpened under power.

So long as sharpening is done by hand it should be fine. A sharpening system that uses jigs and fixtures to maintain a set angle is ideal. The LC comes to you at 20 DPS. I run my own at 15 DPS and accept some reduced edge durability at the narrower angle.

Interesting, I assume this applies for all 3V knives with the Delta protocol?

We're doing the survival knife next. After that I would like to take another stab at a heavy chopper. I want to experiment with a folder. We'll be looking at another pre-order sale after the last of the Field Knife preorder is finished, which is soon. I haven't decided which pattern to do as the next preorder, either the EDC or the LC.

If I can dial in a good HT for CPM 4V, Dan and I are talking about collaborating on a competition cutter for use in Blade sports.

yes

It's a good rule of thumb for all vanadium steels with chrome due to increased heat while grinding and reduced heat conductivity, but it's particularly important in D3V

pretty sure our next collaboration will be a folder

again, with the timing!

Nathan, I realize that you are in the process of bringing out the survival knife right now, but there are many (myself included) who would still love to buy your field knife. I realize that the pre-order threads' purpose was to ease the transition, but it's such a great little knife and there are still many who want one. Is there any possibility of doing additional runs especially considering the help you have recently hired? Thank you.
