The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Nathan, I realize that you are in the process of bringing out the survival knife right now, but there are many (myself included) who would still love to buy your field knife. I realize that the pre-order threads' purpose was to ease the transition, but it's such a great little knife and there are still many who want one. Is there any possibility of doing additional runs especially considering the help you have recently hired? Thank you.

I'll do one last batch of Field Knives in January or February. Probably 20-30 of them. They're in process now and that will be the last of that pattern. I'll revisit a Field Knife again in a future pattern.

Nathan,
I've taken the scales off my FK and now EDC. I notice one of the screws is run all the way down into the female threaded barrel, and the oppose screw is not (and the depth is set based on the overall thickness of the scales at each particular fastener location). This is the case for all 5 fasteners.

I have tried to get the fully-seated screws back out of the female barrels and cannot break them loose. I would like to center them up as best I can so that they are as close to equally engaged as I can get them. Suggestions to get the stuck/seated screws backed out? I'm thinking of a little heat. Thoughts?

Not answering for Nathan of course...

The way the screws function is to hold the scales down basically. The fit is tight between the pin and the scale, tight enough they don't really do much of that anyways. Basically they are not handling stresses from use. So to center them, you would need to replace the fasteners and cut them to meet in the center, but you probably don't want to do that. You already have seen they are secured with loc-tite. So if you really wanted to center everything, you could get fasteners, cut them all to the perfect length, and put new pins in. But I wouldn't bother with any of that. I had one set I wanted to completely separate and was a nightmare that ended up with a new set being ordered.

If you want to center the existing pins... There is very little to be gained there, so I wouldn't bother as they are going to be a pain to get apart, are easy to damage, and you have already seen the interference between them is critical to the scale fit so easy to destroy by squeezing etc. I would just order a new set of pins through Jo, and do it that way. If you plan to cut a set of fasteners, you can just order standard 1" or something and cut them all by hand.

If you are going to go through all that trouble, I would find some titanium ones, and other than black ones, like tumbled etc and get a length figured out for everything then sell them here on the forums, along with handles. There are TONS of us who have bugged Nathan to give more choices that currently exist.

Soo long didn't read: Lots of trouble, little reward. Just order new pins if you can't live with them as is.

I think this is solving a "problem" that isn't a problem, but if you want to center the hardware you'll have to break loose the Loctite, which can be done with heat. If things get boned in the process Jo can send you replacement hardware. This really isn't necessary though, the scales are properly pinned in place and held down secularly with the hardware as the knife is delivered, I don't understand why you'd want to change this?

religious zealotry? :D
sorry, couldn't resist:p

Well... I'm going to make a set of thin, slab style handles and I want them centered up to get things as thin as I can. You're right, there are enough threads of engagement as they are, but I'm just working on something that it may matter. Thanks!

Have you guys seen the scales Tony makes? I'm rooting for him to get them off so he can get to work!

I don't know if your question is rhetorical in nature or not, but TRfromMT aka Tony has an IG account where he displays a bevvy of his work and craftsmanship on there for your viewing pleasure. Some of us know of him from the Survive! subforum and his custom-made handle scales when it came to that brand.

P.S. I think that he can be looked up by his business name Inrange Design, if I am not mistaken. Tony can perhaps expound some more as I do not wish to come across as a shill which may not sit well with the powers-that-be on this subforum!

Thanks guys. I'll post pictures in the CPK modifications thread when I get some under way. I appreciate the comments and complements.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled program...

I'm really sorry, but I have a feeling my joke didn't land, (or maybe it was just as terrible as I thought it was). If you didn't catch the context, what I posted might seem extremely bizarre, or at least more bizarre than usual :)

I missed the typo, so thought the joke was some kind of CPK subforum insider thing... which reminds me of the one when a priest, a rabbi and a knife maker walk into a bar....

I feel it makes you feel better Lorien, I caught it but after being scolded by Bob I'm staying away from politics and religion.

Nathan, is there a limit per person for your planned LC sale on 1/06? I don't mean to perturb the peace and tranquility in here as this is not intended to come across as a loaded question. I am merely planning on going for one for myself plus proxy for another friend but I also realize that there are 30 of these with much interest and we probably won't see many more in 2017 unless you accept a preorders at some point later on. Thank you.

That's a good question. There hasn't been a lot of problems with that so I haven't been planning on instituting any limits. So long as people are being reasonable I don't see any problems.

^^^ Thank you. If I should win a spot, I may ask for two if OK with the CPK honchos.

Nathan, (or someone else who knows)
What are the sharpening angles of the edges on the FK and on the EDC.

Thanks,
TR
