The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I didn't trace or directly copy. I worked in Illustrator, putting anchors at points that define parameters I want, like 5" blade. I was certainly inspired by Mark's FFS and wanted to try my 10" wheel on my new grinder, but I would happily put the final piece beside any CPK model to show differences.
I don't sell any of my work.
This is different from the boot dagger in question whose profile matches every parameter exactly, and multiple copies were made for sale.
Yeah, we are on the same page.

Good morning friends. Nathan has reached out to me to express his wishes that I don't copy his design so closely, which I have replied to in agreement and with contrition. Then I was informed about this public post, so it is only fitting I respond here as well. I shared my rationale behind the design in my sub forum. I now realize the rationale to copy the design so closely was wrong, but here it is nonetheless.

By the way, can you guess which design inspired this dagger? ;)

A little background: Someone approached me after I posted my interest in obtaining a DEK1, and through the discussion we agreed I would make him a dagger in exchange for an extra DEK1 he had. But I had only made less than a handful, so I went looking at designs, and I feel it's a fitting proposal that a knife to be traded for a CPK should itself be inspired by a CPK. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, Jarod cut these out for me, so because the dagger was slim and there was a little room left after the commission, I asked him to fit as many as he could on the sheet. But for the record, I am not planning on making more of this exact configuration.

I am sorry for being a fool. It has never been my intention to stand on the work of others. In fact the reason I made the trade in the first place was to get a CPK in hand for myself in order to learn from it. It just arrived today, and FWIW I really love it, and am in awe of the precision machined perfection, and brilliant design.

Good enough. Thanks for dropping by.

I got pretty pissed years ago when everyone was selling copies of Perrin's "La Griffe"...and I had no interest other than Fred was a friend.

I asked Kit Carson about this one day when we were hanging out...about how he felt about everyone piggybacking on his popular patterns.

He just said "Nothing's new under the sun" and that "we all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us" and shrugged it off.

Better men than I would have been in similar circumstances. I carried a grudge on behalf of both against a variety of makers, some of whom were here on the site. C'est la vie.
I agree, but I've really been wanting a La Griffe but*...

*... straight wharncliffe blade with an acute enough tip to still be functional in piercing tasks, improved steel, asymmetrical slim micarta scales instead of fully skeletonized tang.

And in order to get one, I'd have to have somebody make it for me, because it's a little different from Fred Perrin's knife, and he doesn't make it quite like what I want.

That's been a multi-year frustration in my search for a small defensive knife for the gym.

Have you seen the Spyderco Swick?

It’s very close to what you’re asking for minus the scales (which you could go aftermarket for).

Some interesting info on protecting designs:

Patents are very hard to come by. Time consuming and expensive to get a patent.

Copyrights, on the other hand, are pretty simple and straightforward. Just the act of making a drawing (or a prototype) and putting words to the effect of "Copyright (c) 2022 [your name/business here]. All rights reserved" and you're already well into a good copyright claim. You can take it a step further and actually register copyrights.

Trademarks are another good thing to add and register.

Then you make friends with a good lawyer (maybe one who likes knives) who writes great one or two page letters threatening all kinds of legal disembowelment (that's legalese for a very expensive trip to court) and you can probably nip most crappy knockoffs in the bud.

I owned a Swick a long time ago (I think on the fourth revision of it?) and I did like it, but it's a bit too large for what I was looking for. Also Spyderco's fixed blade sheaths are just... not great. I currently have this Bastinelli Moon Kiss, which is smaller than the Swick and has a much better sheath, but suffers a bit from being chisel ground, which I would prefer not to have, a not-quite-as-acute point as I'd like to see, and from being N690, which is not a bad steel per se, but for a knife this size that was $125 I think we could do better.

Hi Nathan. When may we expect to see these for pre-order? 😇🙃
Thank you.

That? Never. It was a 1 of 1.

when would I do some kind of integral dagger pre-order? That depends on this little gremlin and what college she gets into.

As a rule, I try to stick to high quality high performance knives and avoid extremely expensive collector pieces, but I'll make an exception for education...

What does a CPK Integral Dagger look like?

I don't miss going to the gym...much better having my own downstairs.
I had a bunch of equipment including reverse hyper machine at my old house, but not enough room here.
My son got me to start taking him to the gym and it has been good for both of us. I'm teaching him from scratch and slowly waking up and rehabbing whatever's left of me.

I've used the sledge to pound rebar into the ground while doing some work around the property.

I've used the Halligan to break up some solid ice in the past.

I haven't had to break into a house or car in a while.
Breaking a window is cheaper than using one of those monsters 🤣 lol. Or a basic slim Jim with wedge 👍

Now your gonna make me look for my Halligan lol. The slim Jim hangs in the garage amazes how much I use that for friends locked out

“small defensive knife for the gym“

Is that so you that can keep those pesky nuckle heads from leaning on the equipment that you’re using?😊
Just move a little heavier weight and see if any gas comes out 🤢🤢 They’ll move lol

I couldn’t resist lol 😉🤣🤷‍♂️

Anyone here remember that stuff I think called Metabol weight gain drink ???? Was like the 80’s stuff was like chalk and concrete in one lol

If you don't go to the gym, how will you keep up with the bizarre antics of all the people there, like "Captain Jacked Sparrow" and his rock-hard abs and dark black eyeshadow and mascara? Or "I'm Just Here to Pose with the Machines" woman who has never broken a sweat because the sweat might make her makeup run or stain her designer leggings?
