The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

^ Hi, my name is Mark. It’s been 2 weeks since my last purchase.

Restated in the form of a question:
Nathan, when’s the last time you bought a knife?

Man that's a good question. It has been a little while.

I like to pick up the Japanese Kitchen knives at Blade Show, some of them are pretty awesome.

I bought an $8 "Old Hickory" meat carving knife a few years ago and ground it into something useful for cutting hams. But, yeah, I don't really buy a lot of knives.

My last knife purchased that I can remember

It's not particularly nice. Or in particularly good shape. But it has a thin 36-in hollow grind and it does a pretty job carving up a ham
Is there a typo?

I'm trying to puzzle this one out.

If that's a 36" hollow grind blade, then looking at the proportions, the handle looks about 18" long and 4" tall?

Was this custom made for Andre the Giant, to sacrifice bulls with?

36" wheel for the hollow?
#notnathan it is ground on a curved platen designed to simulate a 36" wheel. Almost, but not quite a flat grind.

Not all hollow grinds are the same. A pretty typical hollow grind might be an 8 inch or a 10 inch hollow grind. A 14-in hollow grind is quite shallow. A 36 inch hollow grind is more like the old Sheffield knives. It is not commonly seen anymore but that very shallow grind is kind of nice in some applications.
