The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Killbill? or perhaps Michonne from walking dead series :) :) :)
Or any one of the shows/movies from Hollywood showing a katana chopping through heavy chains, marble/stone columns, firearms etc. with no damage.

But honestly, Kill Bill seems like a pretty good bet for some lawmaking weak wristed wanker to go, "Did you see all those arms and legs she cut off, and all the people she killed! It's as bad as a machinegun!"

***and some of us will be clearing brush with one too*** 😂

I'm going to call the T-shirt printer and tell them to hold off for a little while...

Nathan,
Could you tell me again why we're not supposed to sharpen delta 3V with power meaning hand sharpening only ?... As ive been trying to sharpen my UF2 but i dont like the results im getting !... Btw im using a dmt diafold guided sharpener and a stropbat from jre industries... So i was looking for sharpening services in New Mexico but the only response i got says they sharpen on a belt grinder and i dont want ruin the delta heat treatment on my UF2's thanks in advance !

Yoko,
Thanks for the advice i think i need to get more and better sharpening stones but due to health problems im unable to keep my hands steady due to CP which makes my entire body twitch and spasm uncontrollably at times so thats why i was looking into the work sharp electric sharpener but Nathan advised against so my next option is guided sharpeners hence the dmt magna guide kit... So until i get better at hand sharpening my options are kinda limited as i dont have anyone close by who could teach me the proper way to sharpen a knife on the equipment that i have !...

You probably wouldn't like the work sharp with your health issues , there's a lot of fine controlled movement with those or things can go bad quick

I use a hapstone r2 that I love , but if you have a bad twitch or spasm I wouldn't want your hand to go into an exposed edge

Just looked up your kit (I think you can fixate it to something stable) are you using a separate angle finder to check your edge angles?

Always light pressure till you raise a burr ( I don't have the greatest sensation in my fingers so I use my wipe down towel to feel for burrs)

Powered grinding can easily burn the very apex of the edge. Delta protocol is more sensitive to this than most. It does not take much to lose the structure that gives us the properties that we want at the very leading edge which is where it really counts.

I do sharpen powered, but the belt is moving slow enough you can read it, and it is dripping wet. Places that sharpen with powered grinders will tell you "don't worry the edge doesn't even get hot". They don't know wtf they're talking about.

I did the math once and I found that you could raise the temperature of the leading .005" edge to 1,000° and it would cool off into the blade before you could touch it and it would not raise the temperature of the blade by 1° . You would never know that you burned it, and you wouldn't understand why your edge retention isn't right.

So I strongly encourage people do not use powered grinding on Delta 3V. I do it, but I'm doing this in production. I'm doing it at low speed and under flood coolant. Most places doing powered sharpening are not doing it right. And it's perfectly fine for a production knife with a shit heat treat, but you do not want to subject a CPK to that.

I have a digital angle finder on order but at first I was just using the 20 degree angle on the guide kit and that was it !...
Come to think of it I was gift a ruixin pro knife sharpener which is a Chinese knock off of a TSPROF kadet sharpener but I've yet to use it !
