The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I've been reading Dr. Larrin Thomas. I have a headache. Toughness versus hardness , carbide types and size , etc etc etc . I'm beginning to think steel development is as much an art as a very complex science. Yep , headache. Still fascinating. I wonder if microchipping is the same as macrochipping. Just on a smaller scale . I guess the straight razor guys were right about light strokes on sharpening steel, too bad it doesn't work on , never mind .
There's a simple solution.

If it says "Carothers" on the blade...you're good to go. No muss, no fuss, no headache.

If it says " Carothers " , the headache is .
1. Demand greater than supply
2. By the time I post , I'm in , the sale is already over
3. And when , due to Jo's kind help , actually get to buy a knife , hiding it from wife
4. And when that fails ( it has ) coming up with an explanation of why I " Need" ANOTHER KNIFE .

What's that saying again? "Happy wife = 'nuther knife?"

Do something to make/keep her happy, man. 😁

Feel bad for asking....

Any pics of the proto folder?

Is it thinner geometry than the fk2 ?

Is the lock face carbidized (might have misspelled) or an interface

Any plans on different blade shapes?

Will you guys adopt me?

That is all

If only stones and steels were equipped with a measurement device that knife maker’s could specify at what weight to press while sharpening (like torque wrench specs)!🤣

Yeah , and if unicorns could fart gold bars . I did read a interesting article about carbide " tear out " . Basically said that isn't true but carbides can fracture at the apex . And that leads to microchipping. Or , it's one of several reasons for chipping . Showed micro slides pictures taken under extreme magnification, that showed examples of this . My understanding, perhaps wrong , is that vanadium carbides are extremely hard but brittle . I'm at the point of just living with the edges I can consistently get , knowing any knife edge has limits ( why we test them ) and I have limits on my skill sharpening any knife . Still , I'm opening to learning more . But a man has got to know his limitations. Now , if only I could find a unicorn 🦄 to fart me out a BurrKing , with a sharpening jig . Btw , straight razor guys would probably buy that device , I've known some to use optical glass to check the flatness of their stones . There's a joke in there somewhere 🤔
