A below zero Delta 3V questionNathan the Machinist ,
As this deep cold we in in now in these parts and upcoming days, such as the -30 F + and maybe lower, does this cold affect your Delta 3V? Not asking or concerned with normal or even semi hard straight down cutting usage.
I’m more asking for example of the bit of lateral force that maybe could be applied to the edge, say in notching a piece of wood and twisting to pop out a wood chip. I’m not talking of heavy chopping, tip prying, or a sudden impact of say repeatedly batoning frozen firewood.
I’m only asking because back when I was working/driving/using the trucks & equipment durn these extra cold winter temperatures, I would both see and hear of odd examples of steel breakage happening, and more common steel breakages of our daily equipment and in areas of the various truck frame supports and moving pieces, especially if it was subjected to a sudden impact (bump, closing, king pin pullers, door springs, axel springs, frame supports, undercarriages, etc...).
I don’t remember any talking or videos of your knives being tested or used in extreme cold. At say -30F and lower, would you know if it’s possible for your Delta 3V to become more fragile or maybe more brittle in regards to chipping or breakage at the blade edge durning normal mild to even just semi hard use in this deep cold weather?
I think I'd be more brittle at -30 than room temperature, for that matter.I have not done any detailed testing although I have abused a knife as it was warming up from cryo and it seemed fine. I'm sure it is more brittle at -30 than it is at normal room temperature, I think most steel is.
According to Nate, the SSDFK will sit in a desk drawer to open letters, and the SDFK will be used to cut bolts and chains.Dumb Question: What is the difference between an SDFK and a Signature SDFK - besides the signature? TIA!
We had a close call here when my wife mistakenly picked up my SSDFK and nearly used it to spread butter on our waffles this morning. Disaster averted...but only just.According to Nate, the SSDFK will sit in a desk drawer to open letters, and the SDFK will be used to cut bolts and chains.
I think it's warrantied for butter on the counter. Butter straight from the fridge OTOH...We had a close call here when my wife mistakenly picked up my SSDFK and nearly used it to spread butter on our waffles this morning. Disaster averted...but only just.
Thank God there wasn't a lead chain left on the kitchen counter.
