The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I got this little black eraser looking thing that has something abrasive in it. Literally use like a child's school eraser.

Any update on the delivery timeline for the NASK pre-orders?

...yeah...

They were going to start shipping this week...

I may as well let the cat out of the bag here, because it didn't amount to anything. We've been experimenting with a variation of the Delta heat treat for 3V, and I thought I might use it on the NASK because in theory it would offer higher ductility at a given hardness by skipping across certain temperature ranges on the way up to austenitizing temperature faster than can be done in an atmosphere oven which (in theory) would reduce the accumulation of grain boundary carbide. And, in theory offer advantages on the way back down too, for similar reasons. This was a molten salt bath variation of D3V and I was hoping it was going to be the next big thing. We've been testing it and it isn't. We're going to stick with the normal delta protocol (so far it's still the best I've ever tested) and we have a batch of 3V blades ready to send out now. Jo is actually going to drive them up to Peter's Wednesday (she's doing a competition cut there this weekend). That will be about 60 blades.

This was going to be a cool surprise for folks, but it didn't pan out.

We have some D2 HDFK prototypes we may complete in the mean time, because it's going to be a few weeks before Peter's can run our protocol for us.

I'm sorry for the delay. It certainly wasn't for lack of trying, the first 30 blades shipped out to HT back on July 7th (a month ago). But it's a non-starter and we're back to plan A. I'm sorry but this puts the first of the preorder shipping around the beginning of September.

Its a shame the new HT didnt work out but the original HT was pretty awesome to start with. I know im still looking forward to using the NASK the way it was meant to be used.

Thanks for the detailed response! What's the story on those 30 blades that had the failed heat-treat regime? Can they be re-treated, or are they scrap?

Now you HAVE to do a Behemoth Chopper pre order to ease the heartache...
