The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

A set of Nitro-V kitchen knives would be great. How about a set of D3V sidecut chisels? Great for general scraping! Handled in a material similar to Resiprene C or the recycled rubber Winkler uses. Setting a security strike plate with a CPK chisel...A perfect use scenario!

Hey Nathan.

I've been seeing some things written lately about a newer stainless steel for hard use knives called Nitro V. It's supposedly similar to AEB-L with some minor additions to the alloy that improve it greatly. All the usual next big thing, "it'll stiffen your thread and leaven your bread" stuff. I was just wondering what you knew and thought about it and if it's a steel you might experiment with in the future for your own knives.

Thanks.

It certainly does sound like awesome stuff for when stainlessness is desired in a design. I've seen it offered and raved about on some pretty darned substantial blades and I've been curious about it. If it's all that some seem to think it is, I'd be very interested to see what it was capable of with a fully optimized heat treatment in a stunning design. :)

Not sure if you've seen Huntsman's recent post re: Nitro V over in the Reviews section. He was very impressed with its performance.

I had. I'd been seeing it talked about here and there but that was what really made me take notice... and start wondering if I need a new machete. :D

a knife I designed 's just been completed by a fellow named Timothy Johnson, and 'll be on its way here. He opted for Nitro-V and went for a super thin bevel. I'll keep yous posted

@Nathan the Machinist you ever consider going to a peened finished the way SURVIVE! does their new spec blades as opposed to the stonewash you use (and they used to)?

FWIW the peened finish holds up fairly well in my experience with it, but doesn't hide wear nearly like the stonewashed.

Nathan got a new stonewash system setup about the time they got thier last machine and the finish is different, much more glossy and smooth. Way less matte.

I like the Stonewashed much Better:thumbsup::D D3V has enough stain resistance already, with minor cleaning and oiling no worries about rust;)

I've picked up rust on my D2 edc but it wasn't anything a little rust eraser action didn't fix. The D3V had a couple specs but it went away with use on my LC.

^ what Justin said. I once bought this Japanese mineral oil which came with a free sample of that and that stuff was amazing and literally erased rust spots!
