The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Hi Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist - for a Diving Knife - would you prefer Micarta or G10, and why, please ? Asking for a friend. :)

Micarta. For the same reason I prefer it in a non-dive knife. More durable, lighter, better tactile feel.

Use the Westinghouse or IP Micarta and it'll handle the moisture fine, they're fully saturated.

It's a common misconception that g10 is more durable than micarta because it is harder.

The phenolic resin in Micarta has higher abrasion resistance than the epoxy binder in G10.

Wear in a sandy gritty environment can become significant over time, and you will enjoy the superior durability of micarta over G10 in this application.

I agree and the micarta will have a much better grip when wet than the G10.

Everyone knows the best binder is the Trapper Keeper

Correct me if I am wrong but in the past you have stated that you don't use paper micarta because of its lack of durability. What makes the International version different?

It isn't paper

The company is "International Paper"

They bought the micarta brand, process, and equipment from Westinghouse.

It is canvas Micarta

To my eye, it is, for all intents and purposes, essentially the same as Westinghouse. But vastly more affordable.
