The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Thanks for your response, Nathan, it makes a lot of sense. Now, knowing that your heat treat process takes your knives to the boiling point of Nitrogen, I am not concerned at all about exposure to extreme cold unless a knife is taken on a space walk. On the other extreme, high desert temperature, the recorded measured temperatures of various objects at high temperature desert sun exposure are all under 180 degrees Fahrenheit. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10211493/ is one example). I bet those temps were measured at the center of the object. The sharp edge, however, could reach a higher temp but it is hard to imagine it will be over 200F. Will 200F do any damage to heat treat? Say someone uses his knife to boil his coffee at 212F and leaves the knife in the hot coffee pot for a while, will that damage the heat treat?

Nathan stated in his response, "My tempering temperatures are in the 400s. Stay below that and it's fine."

Your coffee temperature isn't going to hurt the blade, but I wouldn't be shocked if the coffee discolors it. Some people use coffee to discolor/patina steel deliberately. If that's not something you want, I wouldn't leave my blade in the coffee "for a while" if I were you.

Boiling water won't harm your heat treat or anything else on the knife

I have a question... (maybe someone already asked this so do forgive me if that's the case).

What are your thoughts on entertaining new designs? As it stands now, you're lineup is already legendary but I'm curious if you have plans to bring other models to market somewhere down the road.

I am trying to standardize certain patterns that have evolved into their final form like the field knife and the EDC

There are still some old designs that I want to revisit such as the Skinner

I see us having a mix of standard patterns with the occasional new design to compliment standard offerings

The kukri for example

BladeForum Knife? Lol
I’d be all in for that, but the whining and bitching wouldn’t be worth it.

It ain’t got no 90 degree spine!
It ain’t made out of kurrbin steel!
It ain’t got a saw back spine!
It’s too dang sharp!
I cain’t cut my car in half!
I cain’t dress up in my bushcraft outfit and wear this pretty knaf!!
It ain’t got no nail nick!!
How am I spose to fidget it!!
It costs too much!! I can buy 20 Gerbers fer that price!

I wonder how much of a train wreck it would be for Nathan to have to fit in all the orders for a Forum Knife CPK Kephart. That would be a dream Forum knife for me for sure, but I wonder how extreme the demand would end up being.

I spend a lot of my time on the Traditional forum, and on years when the knife is not made by GEC the demand is usually a couple hundred knives at most (back in the day they would struggle to get 100 orders). On years that the knife is a GEC the demand is like 600. I feel like a CPK forum knife would be a test of how many people have heard about CPK. Would folks balk at the price of a pre-order CPK, or would they get 1,000 knives ordered? I don't know. I feel like Nathan would have to really be willing to take a chance on what the demand would be.

At least the Forum Knife has finally gotten away from the $100 limit. It makes the knives too expensive for a lot of folks, but also makes it possible to get good quality interesting knives. Maybe someday Nathan will decide to give it a shot.

It's a nice idea ... but I don't think there are enough fixed blade users, compared to folders. The average BF user has > dozens of folders, and maybe a single cheap fixed blade.

Speaking of which: Nathan, how is the folder coming along ? :)

When are you going to hang the proverbial "Gone Fishing" sign up in here and stop answering our questions? Seriously just fooque it, go enjoy the vacay and have a blast <3

I did extensive “testing” on a boiled chopper and it cleanly sliced through butter once the butter was brought to room temperature. The results can be seen here:

I've gotta be honest, I don't like it at all that this Shiv, with the Shiv being CPK's logo knife, does not bear the Carothers signature. But before I get myself totally in deep water, maybe that is the way in which the blank was originally supplied.

Very nice work though with the typical Todd Begg insignia "iced jewel?" effect and horizontal hand rubbed satin (hard to discern from the photo).

Me and the Mrs just booked the same hotel as last year

I'm down for more partying in the parking lot!!!!!!!
We’ve got some tough family stuff going on but I’m buyin plane tickets, regardless. Fingers crossed that it all works out. Is your hotel close to the compound ?

Oh, and how many Yoko beers does a feller have to drink to elevate above “lightweight” status. I’ve only had 4 in the last 2 months.🤣🤣🤣
