That is vintage "International Paper".
Crusty just means it came from an outside surface, so the tang side would be solid dark brown, almost like it was on a liner. That isn't crusty, but that doesn't mean it isn't interesting.
I've got great big blocks of the material that I cut into slabs but only the top and bottom surface form "crusty", because they touched the oxygen and have formed a dark crust.
However, there is some material from interior Micarta that is also very fascinating.
The color gradations are naturally forming and some are more striking than others. Jo picked out some interesting material for that one.
