The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

You're going to pay $1,000 for an axe?

Did you bump your head?
We still need to do a design meeting. Need to pick what style.... Chopping, Splitting, Camp, Carver, etc. I think a Mini - camp/ carver would fit CPK very well. And be something more people would actually use. The Wood Bullet by Buckin Billy Ray and Liam Hoffman is specifically design for splitting... And not binding in the round. Like knives geometry matters. So the design needs to be optimized for the use.

A splitter would seem to be a waste for a CPK/D3V.

I was hoping for something close to the GB Scandinavian axe.
Yeah, a D3V felling axe with optimized geometry would kick ass.

I have to say though, I agree that something like the Small Forest axe, or a Camp axe/hatchet/carver etc. would be more practical for a wider number of people.

Not too many folks would need (or use) a felling axe, especially when chainsaws are available, but many folks can use a smaller camp axe/hatchet/carving axe around the property or for camping/backwoods use.

I’m curious to hear thoughts too.

From my limited understanding, issues with full tang hawks are balance, shock absorption, potential for metal fatigue over time, and inability to replace a broken handle. Maybe poor geometry too, depending on the design.

Also, there’s some truly atrocious tomahawk designs out there… Like if Mall Ninja and Stress Risers had a baby. And I happen to like Mall Ninja (sometimes, especially 80’s/90’s flavored).

Maybe the right design could mitigate the concerns. I’m probably off on them anyway.

Not sure how likely it is to break a well made full tang hawk. I doubt my aging noodle arms could do it at any rate.

I do kinda cringe when I see someone make a full tang hawk out of something like O1 or m390 though. Just, yeah… not giving a lot of confidence there.

Anyway, super curious to peek into that brain and glean some insights. Like, what would the least lame full tang tomahawk look like?

This. Very, very few people will ever fell or buck a tree with axe. But around a campfire, using a hand axe to do numerous fun things and camp chores has a much wider appeal. My little 12 inch handle Gransfors is used ALL the time. Hunting but especially in camp for family time. And it fits so nice in my day pack. If the head was 1.5 or 1.75, maybe 2? and had a 15 AND a 20 inch handle option. Oh yeah. Lots a people could actually use it.
