The average knife cost in your collection?

Average $277.

Cheapest - The one that started it all; the Schrade Old Timer 152 I got when I was 16 and still have. $12

Most expensive - Busse Custom Shop Team Gemini $875

I can answer 2 of the questions easily -

Most Expensive - $1600 for a Western W31 USMC Parachutist. Only 500 made during WW2.

Least Expensive, in actual dollars - $0 for about 50 of them.

Least Expensive, in actual cost - I have probably 100 knives that I got for essentially free, or even negative costs. These are the ones where I paid $X for a lot of knives where I only really only wanted one or 2 at the most, sold the rest to pay for THE KNIFE in the lot I wanted and to buy other knives.

As an example, I bought a lot of 62 knives for $65 + shipping because of a single knife in the lot that would be worth between $50 and $60. Found 2 knives in the batch that I sold for $235 total and sold most of the rest off for about $400, so I guess that 1 knife technically ended up -$500, but not really because I spent the extra $500 on other lots of knives.

Two other examples, bought 4 Brazilian M1908 bayonets for $170, kept one for the collection and sold the other 3 for $217. Bought 3 Belgian FN FAL Type C bayonets w/ frogs for $47, kept 1 and sold the other 2 for $44.

Total and average values is up in the air... Do I go with what I paid? Or what they "might" go for on fleabay at the right time? I have a set of 4 knives that I have less than $400 in that will bring over $2000 to the right collector and another set of 4 that I have less than $80 in that would easily bring $200+.

Average value is probably around $25 @. 4 $0 knives bring a $100 knife down to $25.

Total spent is unknown as I bought and sold over 500 knives before I started keeping accurate records.

Average: $107.55
Most expensive: CRK Wilson Combat Star-Tac
Cheapest: Mora Craftline

Thanks Microsoft Excel!

14 knives: total cost $2860ish = $200ish a knife.

$560 Chris Reeve Large Sebenza w/ Box Elder Burl
$40 Rat 1 w/ D2 steel.

Picked up my first GEC the other day and I like it, so the value of my average knife should come down as I have 4 folders to sell and I can see a few other GEC's in my future.

You guys are impressive! I've never tracked prices or numbers of any kind but I'm going to start as long as my wife can't access the data.

Not counting SAKs, Opinels and slipjoints, MTs, gas station cheapos and gifted knives, kitchen knives, box cutters, scalpels and woodworking blades, etc:

FOLDERS: Avg. $85 to $100

Least expensive SRM 6040 - $6
Most expensive Cold Steel Rajah I - $270

FIXED: Avg. 60$

Least expensive - Timberline Pitbull - $6
Most expensive - Spyderco Rock Salt - $190

Holy Crap.......seriously.....HOLY CRAP!! That is not only a lot of Benchmades, it is a boat-load of knives!!

I don't have an entire collection pic..just a couple old pics of my Benchmade collection. Plenty have come and gone since I took these pics, but it takes so long to set them all out and put em back up, so probably not gonna be doing that again

For my fixed and folder knives.....minus traditional Buck slipjoints......I'm at $440.00 average(total of 26 knives). I have no idea what the slipjoint collection averages.....probably don't want to either....somewhere north of 100 in that collection!!

OK:

Total amount spent of the knives you own/number of knives you own = ???

In my case it's:

$7,695/16= $480.94

How about you?

One more question.. what is your least expensive and most expensive knife?

Mine:
Spyderco Manix 2 S110V $120
Rockstead SHIN YXR7 $1000

Disregarding knives I've received as gifts over the years, some quick back-of-the-envelope math tells me the average price of the knives in my "collection" (mostly Alox SAKs) is around $42, give or take a buck or two.

Least expensive - $9.95 (minty "old cross" Victorinox Solo)
Most expensive - ~$175.00 (heavily customized Victorinox Pioneer)

I will say there are some very nice custom slipjoints that have caught my eye lately, so the above information is subject to change.

16 knives (that I could immediately find(there's always one of two loose in my truck)) with the average being $293. The Case Mako I got in a pawn shop for $20. The RJ Martin overkill was $600 as was the Benchmade 47.

And the next question could be: Where do you live and when aren't you at home? LOL

Average cost is roughly $200. That number has gradually increased in the last three years, but I'm unlikely to ever spend more than $400 on a knife.

High: $1370 total for a personalized Hinderer XM-18
Low: $13 for a Kershaw Injection 3.0 I bought on clearance
Average: $275

Yeah man, I sit right in that range too. QC issues really kill me, so I find that sub 200 is a reliable range for a refined knife. The worst issues I've had on those knives have all been minor or entirely non existent.

Beyond 400, we start getting into a strange new ball game. I have heard of too many QC issues on midtechs to really want to try them out. I'd rather have a flawless $400 productive knife.

Although, there are exceptions. I'm still pining after a Ferrum Forge knife. The VECP is also seriously tempting. And Millit Knives appears to do phenomenal work and look to be growing their own brand soon (they usually contract out midtechs like the Aegis Hoplite).

But overall all, I probably get the most value out of the 250$ range.

I have implemented a "System of Ten". I limit myself to ten knives in my collection at a time. :p

This makes me critical of my purchases and my love for the one's i have now :-)
I think i'm at a 3000 dollar total now. Cheapest knife is a Spyderco Pingo and most expensive is a Large Insingo (crazy expensive in the EU) . Inbetween there are a couple of Ferrum Forge knives and a few customs.

So a $300 average.
