The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Does anyone here have a comparison of NeOn variant scale thicknesses? Do they vary at all? My NeOn HatiOn Lite is approximately 10mm thick.

I'm currently considering a Neon R20 or Quantum.

I also like the older style Neon Lite (I like the swirly pattern design but that doesn't seem to be available anywhere). The current Neon seems a bit plain although the slight increase in size is better for me.

Has anyone bought or handled the R20? If so, any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm also interested in any feedback comparing any of the smaller Neons vs the Quantum. I understand the size and blade differences but I'm not sure I can clearly follow why there is an approx. $400 jump in price. Has it also got a better fit/finish, action, cutting performance?.

I haven't handled any Shiros so I'm shooting blind here - any guidance will help. Thanks.

I assumed that the 3D milled titanium scales on the Quantum contribute to the price difference in addition to the size difference you mentioned, but I just looked at the prices of Shiros at Recon1 and the Quantum is the same price as the F95s. Another example of a similar price difference is that between the F95 series and the F3, the latter is $200.00 less. The NeOn Lite and Ultra-Lite show up on the exchange every now and then.

Here's a picture that may help. Unfortunately, I never measured the scales' thickness. Here's a write-up on some of the NeOns.

Is the third one from the left the 3D milled Custom NeOn? I believe that one is thicker than 10mm.

It's definitely thicker than the serial models as it has contoured scales and felt great in hand, ok in pocket and hard on the wallet. I'd measure them for you, but I sold all but the UL.

Thanks. I guess the extra titanium in terms of size and what is milled away adds up in terms of price.

EDIT: Quantum ordered and on its way. Heh.

I had been disappointed as I thought there wasn't really anything going on here in the Den recently. This has been a watched thread for me since my OP almost 4 years back now and I haven't gotten any alerts for a while, but the BF servers have been a bit funky lately as we all know. Anyway, it's great to see some action here by posters old and new and some good discussion along with some sweet new knives to check out.

mikomonday mikomonday , that NeOn Hard looks great and pairs beautifully with your gorgeous F7.

Congrats on your Russian Hokkaido, @dburpasaurus --that Barker collaboration has always been one that particularly appealed to me.

I've always liked the MEFP version of the F95 too, @1AbominAble1 , and you have the NeOn to go with it. I have one Fragged knife--the RJ Martin Machine Flipper--and that pattern gives the Shiros a highly transformative utilitarian/industrial sorta vibe.

For a third F/Neon pattern, we have @Dogdrawz 's NL pairing, those two looking great together.

Like our friend, CPP CPP , I can't report any trouble with lockbars migrating too far inward over time on any of my several Shiros. My old user Hati came to me years back in tough shape after a hard life with about 4 previous owners and it took me a bit to get the flipping action back to where it should be. Since receiving it, though, the lockbar shoulder has pretty much sat against the blade tang and there's not the slightest amount of play evident even after years of use. The only lock-up issue I've had with any of my Bears had been a too-early engagement on my F3 Python which could slip if opened lightly and I tweaked it to travel a bit further to be more secure. The rest haven't moved but a tiny taste to settle when breaking in.

Nice to see these new knives, good pics, and commentary here. I've got nothing really new to report beyond finally putting the Pivot Bead I got from CPP with my RDD on my Tabargan.

I won't post it here, but I did recently pick up my third knife by another Russian maker, Andrey Biryukov from Pavlovo, Nizhny Novgorod.
