The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

I highly recommend the Astrum FP review by Dmitriy (Дмитрий Дробычъ) to anyone, who took time and effort to register on the maker's web-site.

He disassembled the knife after a few hundred of flipping cycles and provided a bunch of informative pictures.
I've tried to register a few times for their site and succeed, but typically find my account is no longer active after a week or two. Not sure if they regularly purge western e-mail addresses or what. It's very odd.

Very odd indeed and quite unfair to overseas customers.

OK, I'm going to share a few pictures from Dmitriy's review.

BTW, the Shop and Forum sections used to be publicly available without hassle. Registered-users-only policy is a recent (and rather annoying) "innovation".

Cherry popped. First Shiro in hand. More to come.

Wow, what a knife.

Was a little concerned about the size, generally like a real big folder. Worried for naught. Size is perfect. Though next will be F95 or 111 for posterity.

Impressive all the way around, especially fond of the lock, blade shape, action both ways and the masterpiece of a pocket clip. Detent perfection. Haven't made it to the details yet.

Bad news is, entire family of five has covid. Good news is covid with Shiro ain't so bad. lol

I really liked the unique white/blue initially. I just didn’t really carry it much due to the white, and the white lanyard. Yes it got dirty pretty fast lol.

To me it looks like the blue accents are blue and glued into the white scale (2 separate pieces). They look like they were separate pieces at one point.

The steel on this F3 is CTS-40CP, but a lot of them were Elmax. I really love the comfort of the F3, and this SRBS fires like a rocket and as drop shutty as my other MRBS’s.

That dye job turned out awesome, the results do have a CF look indeed, very cool!

So I was reading back posts in this thread about the F3 to F3R changes wondering if any pivot changes were made? I know Shiro went from SRBS to MRBS and added underlay washers for the R but is the pivot size still the same?

The reason I ask, I found some takeoff CF scales from an F3R and was hoping they might fit my base F3 in G10/elmax (ffg) if anyone can confirm?

I’ve probably missed it in here, but curious if anyone has order replacement/upgraded bearings from the guy on eBay?

I did, mainly because I was afraid I would lose a bearing…. or 5 when dismantling.

I got one set of the ZrO2 Zirconium Oxide Ceramic (or equivalent) and one set of the Si3N4 Silicon Nitride.

I installed the white to start (mainly because they look cool haha). I don’t really feel a difference, didn’t really think it could get much better as the action and detent on it were near perfect. It does seem like the SCHWACK upon opening is a little dampened.

I did splurge and get the Shirogorov 3 pack tool kit from REK Knives REK Knives and the little driver. Pretty pricey, but should help me from boogering any more screws lol 🤞

I bought some replacement loose bearings from Amazon(1.5mm steel bearings, made out of 52100) - made sure to stick with steel since that's what Shiro uses. I believe the switch to Ceramic will wear the titanium noticeably quicker than the steel, and they may even risk wearing the blade? Ceramic is generally harder than steel so it's possible at the very least. Need to be careful with how much you tighten down the pivot.

That's a really cool bearing race design. I've never owned a Shiro, and so my knowledge on them is very minimal, it looks like they designed that race though so that if you know where that little opening on the side is (when the knife is assembled) you can get a drop of oil inside the whole bearing system without taking the knife apart. I suppose you'd want to assemble it to where that tiny cutout is facing due forward so that you know where it is, and you have the shortest amount of reach to get to it when the knife is assembled. That's what it looks like to me anyway.

I'd like the idea that the ceramics shouldn't dig a trench in the blade/scale side race. Or maybe that's not a thing. 🤷‍♂️

That’s definitely something I can keep in mind next time It comes apart.

To me it is a break so that it can provide some spring tension by being a little oversized, and remain in there without falling out, as well as you can take off tension easily when you need it to come out by compressing it a little. That was just my guess initially though.

I requested and received bearings directly from Shiro before the war in Ukraine, I’m not sure if or how that may affect the process

Shiro started to sell "repair kits" (screws and bearing balls) not long ago. These kits are intended for specific models, you need to choose the right one for your knife. Some of them are available from R1 at the moment.

By the way, I stumbled upon the pictures of quite unusual pivot upgrade for F95T Gen1 — 75 tiny ceramic balls per side, how do you like it? 🙃

Valeriy a.k.a. Dept13 was the first owner, he replaced the washers with the custom bearings and sold the knife to someone on a local forum 6 years ago:

Ahh I see what you mean, yeah that's a cool modification and application for that. I like it! Maybe it can double for both uses.
