The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Zero back in stock at the main U.S. distributor. Toot, toot 'cos won't last long! Gone in less than 20 mins.
Wow! I sympathize with whoever’s hoping to get a Zero. When they hit the website, they disappear with stunning speed. Maybe the disappearance speed will slow down in a few months.

Not related to Shiro, but did you guys see the sprint run for Spyderco, 800 units in 4:37 minutes, this is just crazy, I logged on Recon 1 they still had them, but I’m just short after buying a Grimsmo, soon

Yup. If I lived in the states I would have got one. I was on the site looking at it in stock.

Another batch of Neons came and went today. But it seems like they have a decent stream of them. That was the 3rd batch since they released if I remember correctly.

Now that it's out of stock I can tell myself it's too small and too expensive and that I don't need one. Compared to opposite thoughts whilst it was in stock.

fixed up the edge on my f3 last night, gonna go back for a touch up as the two sides arent even at the tip and id like them to be.

Its much better now and sharp, really can fix it at my leisure. Gonna try getting some micarta scales at some point to try out, maybe a set of the roller bearings?

I love how much blade is packed into this handle, the handle seems smaller after the blade is opened.

So the hati on washers has a pivot bushing? Ive been interested in that carbon fiber PB hati since the nick shabazz review and id find a bushing to be very compelling. Hation or neon in the future cause i tend to prefer a smaller knife.

Ive been reading through this thread the past few days and i think it would be better if i didnt.....all these pictures are peer pressure.

Whats everyone’s preferred method of sharpening? Which system, stones, etc. I am curious as I am close to pulling the trigger on an KME, thanks guys

Either the KC page for the Zero is not functioning properly or they're available for preorder: you can add it to your cart but it "usually ships in 2-4 months."

KC isn’t the main US Distributor.

True, but for those who “just gotta have one”, securing your place in line via pre-ordering with KC might be preferable to repeatedly missing out on incredibly short windows of opportunity with R-1 and remaining empty-handed.

I sharpen mine on a KME, with diamond stones and a leather KME strop thingy with 5 micron paste I believe. It's at work, so I can't check to see the micron paste size. I just picked up a Wicked Edge and haven't used it yet because I keep reaching for the KME. The WE is used, I feel like I got a good deal on it.
If you do get the KME, they've got a package deal on one that has 6 diamond stones, the strop thingy, the micron paste and Arkansas stones. That's the one I traded for.

EdgePro now. All but one of mine came very close to 20 DPS so I was initially able to touch them up on the SharpMaker. I've had them all on the EP since and have kept the narrow factory secondary at 20 so they can be quickly touched up on the SM with the fine and extra-fine rods. The 111 came at about 23 DPS and I re-profiled it to 16 on the EP with a 20 micro-bevel on the SM.

I have the older EP diamonds made for ceramic knives in Fine and SuperFine that I use for re-profiling or damage (no Shiro damage to date), but stick with the 220, 440, and 1000 EP hones for the Shiros, finishing up with 3000 polishing tapes and stropping to clean off any little burr that might remain.

Wicked Edge for me. Touch up between sharpenings with the Sharpmaker.

Really your question about what is preferred for a Shiro comes down to what you think you will be most comfortable for any premium knife/steel. It's got nothing to do with Shiro, per se.

Edit to add: focus on getting a system that you think you will be confident enough to turn loose on a high-end knife. For me, the Shiro was the 4th knife I sharpened on my W.E. - it was easy to be that confident (considered myself a total sharpening rookie, still do in many ways). Buy for confidence, not just to have a high end sharpening system.

KC pre-orders are equivalent to a rabid donkey chasing a carrot on a 10’ pole. Not much better.

It has a PB bushing that goes around the pivot like the steel bushing does on the sebenza. It also has pb washers. I believe the female pivot barrel is also shouldered against the cf scale so you can crank the pivot all the way down and still have a good action. It might be shouldering against the bushing though.

Either way being able to crank the pivot down seems to prevent the pivot from backing out with no loctite.

What system are you using to fix up the blade on your shiro?

I do freehand sharpening with the knife in one hand and the sharpener in the other. Although the Hati came with quite a toothy stock edge the edge bevel angles were almost perfect and nice and even. (Only extremely slight recurve from the belly to the heel and the very heel juts out a tiny bit.)

Since it came with such good stock edges I used my spyderco sharpmaker medium, fine and ultrafine rods freehand just to polish the bevels and touch up the apex which worked wonderfully.

sounds like i gotta get a hati on washers someday.

Gonna take my f3 apart sometime soon, i gotta see the pivot collar. Ive blue g10 scales with orange accents and the pivot collars look painted on and well, i gotta see. I cant feel a gap or anything and well ill be really really impressed to see it separate from the scale.

Do any of the new Hati come on washers still? All the Hati R models I’ve seen are on bearings. I like Sheros but knives on bearings are not a practical solution for me, I work in the dirt on my hands and knees all day. Every knife on bearings I’ve owned gets dirt in the bearings within a day at work. I sold my 95 T because I couldn’t bring my self to use it at work.

Since KC showed the Zero in stock and available as of 5:00pm EST today (which would suggest they’d filled any outstanding pre-orders before they listed it as being in stock and available), it would seem that your colorful donkey analogy is less than appropriate.

Edit: When I went back to the KC site 45 minutes later, they had that “usually ships in 2 to 4 months” wording up. I guess they didn’t have many. Ongoing availability apparently isn’t happening yet.
