The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

You know that BF members are all enablers and take great joy leading their fellows toward bankruptcy and marital discord, so let me reassure you that picking up an NL would not constitute "settling". As I described in our earlier exchange, I find it in no real way the lesser of my pre-R Turtle, despite its lack of jimping and Elmax instead of M390.

@Officer's Match has been around these forums for a long time, came to Shiros only recently through the NL, seems more than pleased with his knife, and has not expressed any real interest in "moving up". As with anything YMMV.

Heck, I'm still blown away by my older S30V Turtle. Single row bearings, no internal milling, "old steel" but it makes me happy. One of the best knives I own and got it for a screaming deal.

10:15 AM per email update alert from R1: Zeros back in stock.

This is just a PSA and a marker. If inappropriate, I will remove as I already have my own!

Nice knife, and I remember that feeling, too. After I’d finally sprung for an M390 Turtle, I had that “Phew----I’ve finally arrived at this level, so now I can slack off buying better and better knives" feeling. The feeling lasted for a while, but it wasn’t permanent. I haven’t bought any other >$1K knives since, but I’ve bought others that cost most of that much.
I hope the feeling I have toward this knife stays with me for a long period of time. It’s been 6 weeks now and I still don’t have the urge to carry another knife. I believe that the longest I’d went before was maybe a week to two weeks and then I’d be buying another of the latest and greatest knives.
I have stopped getting all hyped up and having to keep hitting refresh at a certain time when the latest version of an exclusive Spyderco comes out with a different blade steel and colored handle.
We will see how long this lasts, but at this moment I’m hoping it’s for quite a while.

Denizens,

I've noticed my F95T has a tiny amount of play when the blade is closed. If I put just a small amount of pressure on the flipper tab, before the detent lets go and the blade opens, the tip if the blade will wiggle up and down a bit. It's like the detent hole in the blade is slightly oversized relative to the detent ball. With a little pressure on the tab, I can get the tip of the blade in the handle to move up and down maybe 1/32" (at the most).

Anyone else have this going on?

TRfromMT TRfromMT , I just checked my 2 95's--SRBS Turtle and F95R--and those are both wiggle-free. I'm also holding the NL World Tour knife (F95NL) and that's solid too. Is it possible that your detent ball has somehow become depressed? Or damaged? Does the knife seem to be freer opening/closing than it was?

ChazzyP ChazzyP - nope. It seems in all ways just how it's always been. I actually noticed this a few months ago. Just never occurred to me to ask.

I cannot wrist-flick/shake the knife open. When it is closed, it is against the stop pin.

It's a trivial matter, as far as I'm concerned. Only asked out of curiosity, mostly.

Thanks,
TR

R-1 just opened up another lottery. This one’s on a “JB Stout Finish” special edition F95. The Ti show scale has some engraving, the blade is “bronze tinted” and the clip and hardware are all upgraded, “prettier than usual” grade stuff. It’s an M390 bladed, MRBS, Ti-scaled frame lock and the finish on the scales looks like a worn or “distressed” kind of finish.

I may be missing something, but I don’t think I see ~$500 worth of upgrades above and beyond what you get in a F95R19 or F95T. They clearly put some effort into the aesthetics of it and it’s a different-looking F95, but $500 for enhanced aesthetics doesn’t catch me. This lottery isn’t for me.

Do they make a neon with m390 and a stand off instead of backspacer?

Has anyone changed the hati backspacer out with a standoff?

The Neon Ultra Lites have standoffs instead of backspacers. There are some in M390, s90v and S30v out there iirc.

My NeOn UL is in S30V. I bought it both to save a few bucks as well as having a preference for open-back construction. As far as I know, the ULs have only been offered in S30V and Elmax. I don't know if Lites and Ultra-Lites will still be produced, given the introduction of the NeOn Zero, though they're certainly available on the secondary market. I have my UL and an F3 is S30V, and while I'm a big fan of M390 and have that in many knives, I'm perfectly content with the "lesser" steel as Shirogorov does a great job with it.

I looked into changing out my Hati to a single standoff and had some communication with the Shiro rep over at USN about it. He had to wait to hear back from someone at the Workshop regarding the availability of parts, but that person was on vacation and I never did get an answer. Despite the similarity between Hati's and F95's one can see that 95 slabs are milled out to accept the single, oversized standoff while there is no such relief on the Hati, so I doubt very much that a stock Shiro 95 standoff would fit. One might be able to find something from a knife supply dealer, but you'd need the right size and compatible screws. If you look at the interior milling on The Hati, you'll also notice that any standoff would require a fairly small footprint to miss the adjacent lightening pockets. That's something that's on my knife-related to-do list that I haven't gotten around to yet.

Thanks, yall.

I intend to buy a standoff from something like jantz and machine it to fit, still using the Shiro rear screw and female nut.

Thanks for the neon info. I wouldn't be opposed to s30v, as I had a Hati in that and Shiro did a great job on the HT on it. I have an elmax nudist, and while it's still great, it's not quite as durable as the S0V was. That's my only reason for wanting m390 over elmax.

After I wrote I got thinking about that standoff again and thought along the same lines as you, buying one and milling out the center to allow the Shiro receiver to fit through.
A properly sized ferrule would work too.

I may try to order one tonight. Will post once I finally do it.

I have had an itch for a TNK Shirogorov Cannabis for several years. I always seem to miss out on them when they come up for sale. The same thing happened last week when I saw one listed here only to have it sold in minutes. I was bummed out after that which made me search to see if one might be available. Well, it turns out TNK still had the original prototype that Shirogorov gave them before the run of 100 was created. I got it today, and wow, what a gem!
