the becker etch how to. NEW TECHNIQUE AND PICS POST #25

I use muriatic acid to remove scale from blades after heat treating them. After cleaning the rust off use windex or baking soda solution to neutralize the acid action. Then it should keep hte rust from coming back the next morning. Great thread Clich. When I did my BK11 last weekend I didn't keep it in very long but it has a nice tooth pattern. Can't wait to do my new BK7.

I don't know if I want to do my Bk2 with it, but I have some lesser knives I might. Good job.

Thats some nice work bro! The Izula has a nice even patina. Can such a result be achieved with a water/vinegar solution? Im looking for some how to’s cuz one of my blades need to show some skin soon.

Water/vinegar will give an even look, almost like its coated. If you want a cool pattern with vinegar, wrap the blade in a paper towel, soak it in vinegar or my favorite Worcestershire, and let it sit over night

New technique i tried to let ya all know about it. For those that want an etch, but dont want it all over the blade, well heres your how to:

Apply painters tape to parts of the blade you do not want etched
apply blue to areas you do
remove tape and apply new tape to areas the are already blued
Apply a thick coat of carmex (or any beeswax and oil based lotion, I used badger balm) to the entire unblued area. The reaction can "walk" so make sure everything you don't want etched is covered.
Remove tape now you should see nice straight lines between your blued areas and your not blued areas
Soak in bleach and follow the rest of the steps from post 1

Voila! just the flats!

Very nice clich! I just did this same thing to my Kabar Cutlass but had to be very careful, this would have saved a lot of time!

That looks great, Im going to try that method. Will any whiskey do or does it have to be Jameson ?

That looks great clich, I thing that would look amazing on a 9. Might try that if I ever work up the nerve to strip and de-ramp my 9

That's my favorite one so far. Very nice. Love it.

You were the inspiration. I figured if stuff like that can keep dreadlocks from getting moldy it's gotta be able to withstand some bleach. I should really stop experimenting on Knives I like tho. Like every mod i ever did, who knows how this could have turned out. I'm lucky I guess

Looks amazing. I really like both patterns.

Not being critical, but with an etch like that, does it create a surface resistance when you are cutting through something? Also, doesn't it also give moisture a place to hide? I personally don't like oil on my blades. I like to be able to work in the kitchen without first stripping oil off a blade.

Its not all that deep, but I guess it could give moisture a place to hide. But with the blue patina in the etch it gives it some protection. Since its not deep I haven't seen any problems with increased friction

Nice work clich. You know, as much modding as you do, I'm surprised you haven't started making your own knives yet.

All that planning and grinding and heating and hammering and everything else that goes into it...no thanks. I like just taking an afternoon and improving things. Besides with my luck ill make one and everybody will be knocking on my door wanting one and to be honest I just don't got that kinda time :D
