the becker etch how to. NEW TECHNIQUE AND PICS POST #25

For the logos, I would think that PCB etchant or electro etching would work better. The gun blue/bleach method, from what I understand, isn't as exact, and would be better suited for larger areas. I've been thinking about Cliching my next Becker... when I finally do get one :D

Would the gun blue/bleach method be good for using on the laser etched logos to deepen them?

All my Beckers aside from my Machax I've been lucky to get roll stamped ones. Really want to strip the machax of its coating and basically only have some blue and bleach handy and sadly too broke to purchase anything else

This is the easiest way to preserve the logos, if you have not stripped it yet.
The pics in the beginning of the thread do a great job of showing how to etch the logos.

The only thing I have trouble with is exactly how to use the old phone charger. I ripped one up a few weeks ago and there were four wires inside the micro usb plug and being that I didn't see black and red and my limited knowledge of electricity told me to not try anything idiotic so I left it alone. Whew, run on sentence. Naturally, now I can't find the old charger I ripped up.

Yeah I don't know about the micro usb stuff either. Mine was an old Nextel Motorola charger, luck would have it only two wires.

Any method is only as exact as the resist you use. FWIW the PCB and electro etch are both easier and safer than the gun blue/bleach. If you can't find a suitable charger, a battery will work just fine, even a simple 9V.

Sorry to dig up such an old thread- but this is the somewhat difinitive instruction on the bluing-bleach etch method.

But I have a question... First off, I am wanting a look somewhat like Andy's "spalted steel", and most all of the tutorials I have found show the knife in a vertical(ish) orientation, I am wondering about a larger bath- like a pyrex 9x13" pan. Does anyone have experience with this? The possibility of the down side of the blade having a different look than the up side- if it does, I am thinking I might just mask with petroleum jelly on the down side, process once, mask the etched side a d repeat with the former down side. Clear as mud?

Any input or ideas or picturs of your experience would be greatly appreciated!

I have never tried the 'ol blue bleach method...
But if I did I would try it horizontally as well.
I would think it would turn out very similar to FBF's "spalting".
Pure speculation, but I really do think it would yield a similar result.
