The Beer Scout Knife

That's a really nice picture of the chestnut Eric...I have to agree that the cocobolo is the nicest looking BS so far, but that Bloodwood Barry posted is a LOOKER with that bowtie.

Carrying the chestnut, but received the micarta soda scout today. I think I would have preferred canvas micarta. You can't see any weave in the linen. So far, of the six I have I would rate them as such:

1) Cocobolo
2) Tortoise Shell
3) Chestnut Sawcut
4) Natural Linen Micarta
5) Smooth Ivory Bone
6) Gabon Ebony

I have a bloodwood on the way and would also like to pick up the KSF camel bone.

My favorites in no particular order are the chestnut "beer scout", blood red "soda scout", and bloodwood "gun scout".

But I would have ordered all of the "beer scouts" if they had the normal "scout" shield. Although I like tortoise shell, it is way too over the top for my tastes when combined with that shield and the etch.

Just picked up the "scouts" that were patiently waiting for me. :)

I'm in trouble because I love both of them. I had originally planned to buy 1 scout, then it was 3, and now I have a 4th on the way! ;) :p

There was also a treat from Collector Knives in the box. I'll get some photos up when I'm back at home.

Here's an orange one.

I received my micarta version today. Was the one I was most excited about. I really like the beer scout shield better though and the micarta isn't quite what I expected. Can't decide if I should sell or trade it or just sand it. If it had the BSK shield I would sand it for sure. All three of mine have excellent fit and finish and are really nice knives. Now I just need to find someone who doesn't like their saw cut :)

I dig that dangler set up, I might have to make one.

I didn't take to the bail, so I removed it and had a hell of a time fitting the leather lace through the SMALL lanyard hole... lots of skeining, twisting, sore fingers and resorting to needle nose pliers, but the result was worth it.

Light brown slabs, medium and dark brown leather lanyard.

Scouts are all in - I showed real restraint and only picked up three...
Linen Micarta, Ebony and Ivory (bone).

And a shot of the Natural Linen VS the Natural Canvas.
I like the Linen; however, I think I prefer the rough weft and weave of the Canvas. Both knives are smooth, the Canvas is just more visually interesting.

use fishing line next time - works great to get thicker lace through smaller holes.

I heart canvas - that couple looks great!

you got me beat MrBitters nice comparison. Really like that 15 clip.

Just shot these up in the dying sunlight. The linen (Almost looks like paper micarta to me tbh) vs the linen Dowell Trapper

Might have helped, I definitely would have given it a shot.

Too bad my issue was ths lace not fitting due to the larger diameter, hence the twisting. I had to work the material down to a thinner and softer state of rest. The skeined part was tearing off if it was anything less than 1/2 thickness.

It does look like paper micarta to me as well, which is why I haven't sanded mine already... I would have Loved canvas... To the fact that I am considering a rescale in the future.

These black specks are present to some extent on almost every white bone knife of theirs I've seen, if one looks closely.

Meanwhile, mine came in, and it is just too cool:

... and I still don't even like beer.

[It has some black near the rear ridge of the pile side cut out. I don't mind it, but will try to get a picture of it soon as a reference point for the above, what I've seen and come to expect to some degree with smooth white bone.]

Most all of the Smooth Ivory bone models have pepper spots to some extent due to the finishing process and is part of 'the nature of the beast'. The buffing compound finds its way into every crack or crevice (and pores in bone) and I think is also the usual culprit on those knives that have a sluggish action. A good toothbrush scrubbing with hot water & detergent wouldn't hurt, but won't remove all of the specks. Make sure you blow the water out with air or WD-40 and dry and oil the knife after.

Here's an image showing some of the black-ish coloration near the easy-open cutout of my white Beer Scout Knife (<-- one has to write all three words ;)):

I haven't attempted to remove any of it, as per Barry's guidelines or otherwise. As I mentioned previously, it doesn't bother me, and in fact I kinda like it-- although I understand that others may not feel the same.

I look forward to seeing the effects of time and use on this 'peppered' knife. :)
