The BEST Knife For Under $20?

Anything from Victorinox.
For EDC, a Farmer, Pioneer/Soldier, or Cadet in alox may suit you. The cadet is the thinnest of the bunch, and comes in a variety of colors.

+1. Can't go wrong with a Vic.

$18. But they don't make 'em like this anymore. Not sure what the new Soldier costs, but there's probably still plenty of the old model left for under $20 if you look around.

You want a free Drifter? I bought one to test the lock, but now that my force gauge is back from calibration, I changed my mind. It's unused. I don't feel like running a contest thread for 6K posts.

People like you are why I love BF. That's a nice thing you're doing.

Opinels are okay, but once in a while you'll see a batch with a poor heat treat.
My Opinel blade was a disappointment, but I've been told by some folks here this is the the exception.
(I guess that happens with cheaper production knives... cheap QC...)
Good Luck!

I wouldn't hesitate to buy any knife that has been suggested so far. Just pick which one appeals to you the most. You won't be disappointed.

+1 man, that's very nice of you. And OP, settling for a $20 budget to save up for a delica for the lady, +1 to you too

Good advice here.

I'd join in with the Opinel chorus, and also add my favourite folder, the Douk-Douk.

+1 on the Kabar Dozier and Byrds (I own the Meadowlark and CaraCara).

A Boker Trance runs a few buck more too. Another great knife!

Byrd's, Opinels, Drifter, all good, all get razor sharp, all have good blade steels.

Victorinox Soldier Alox is good but I also recomend a often overlooked Victorinox Pioneer Solo. You should get that well under $20. Light and tough. Excellent EDC and gentelman's knife combination.

Well, for a fixed blade, any of the Cold Steel knives. Such as the roach belly, canadian belt knife, or the finn bear. Also if you look in the right places, you might find a g.i tanto or a long hunter. For a folder you might try a cold steel pocket bushman or some of the Bucks.:D

You might want to check out the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. Very strong.

Spend $10 more and you can get a Spyderco Tenacious, which is one of the best cheap "high end" knives I can think of. If not, I second the Byrd Cara Cara--don't have one, but I used to have a Byrd Meadowlark and was amazed by the quality.

There was a recent thread on the Svord Peasant Knife which runs about $20 with shipping. I am looking forward to getting one.

Joe

I thought they don't let students carry knives anyway... meh just pony up and get the Kabar Warthog II. It's the only folder I can ever say I really liked. Maybe because it saved my life so many times... rock solid lock, comfortable grip, quality materials and finish.
