The BEST knife steel

Rowen's 1095 is super, sharpens w/o too much trouble and holds and edge. I have a Busse INFI but haven't sharpened it yet.

Folders: they've all dinged me somewhere & sometime; CPM S30V, CPM 154 (my favorite) D2, VG1, VG10, AUS8 all are good IMHO.

CPM-154, favorite steel so far. Takes a super keen edge and holds it a very long time, unlike other super steels in which the super keen edge deteriorates quickly into a working edge. Also, not that hard to sharpen.

Only problem, not many production knives made with this steel and I can not dish out $500+ to get one made in this steel. So far only bucks 110 in cpm-154 is all I have :(, though I drool when I see those Mayo TNT CPM-154 knives.......

Best at what? cutting dirt and mud covered rope or slicing meat?

Fixed or folder?

Prybar or slicer?

What is this thread about?

With the vast selection of high performance steels I can think of about 20 different steel that one could consider "best".

I think a better question would be do you know how to tell the difference?
Enough said! The truth is most people(including myself)couldn't tell the difference.

I've heard a bunch of people over the years say it matters, but I'm incline to believe it doesn't at this point in my life. I can't say I've ever know of a task I could handle quite well with 440C. I am playing with D2 right now but I've retired all steels other than D2 and 440C.

I would have like to seen this in a poll so we would have totals to review. :)

A2 on my Bark Rivers perform so wonderfully...
Folders: I am big traidtional guy so I like 1095 and D2 for my folders and of course S30V, VG-10, D2 and M4

There would have to be a lot of selections. I like D2 now that I'm used to it. I hated it for the first year I worked on sharpening it but I believe (pretty sure) I like it more than S30V which is the darling of so many great knives.

They've all bit my fingers at one time or another over the years, except for a couple I haven't owned which haven't had the honor of giving me a nick - YET! :D

No such thing. It's a noob question to start with.

What's the application? Then, we maybe can talk.

303 stainless with RC 35-40.

Will not hold an edge or cut effectively for very long, but dang difficult to rust.

;)

Professor.

S90v, ZDP-189 and Doziers D-2 have all performed really well for me so far. I would be hard pressed to tell much difference.

Yeah, Ron is a noob, everyone knows that.

Well, he's acting like one asking whats the BEST knife steel.
He knows enough about knives to know we can't suggest a steel without him giving us the application.
