The Bird & Trout Thread

it's my favorite knife for just about everything but it was designed with this in mind :)

JK Toby's Knife

I don't do much bird shooting anymore, but now I've got lots of time to fish. The Buck woodsman has done a good job for me since 1969 when I got my first one. It was down to a sharpened toothpick by 1999, so in 2000 my better half gave me a new one. Now 13 years later, it still works great. The Buck literature descrived it as being designed for fish and small game. Of course, I took some 220 paper and roughed up the polished handle for a better grip when wet. I don't know why Buck polished the micarta so slick.

Here's a Case small game knife I bought in 1985. One of the prettiest knives I've ever owned. It doesn't get used often.

Here's a Lakota Fin Wing that I used quite a bit over the last 3 decades.

This one was made by Terry Primos, an ABS bladesmith who subsequently dropped out of the knife scene. It's forged 1084 with an Australian Ring Bow Yakka handle.

Shown this before; all my design, Alan Davis made it. CPM154. Probably wouldn't fit what some people imagine as a BnT but it fits the category of all rounder. I sold it when I needed funds but actually made a significant profit thanks to Alan's increasingly great reputation :)

The Lakota Fin Wing is a nice knife Gary. I've had mine since they first came out and did use it a couple of times but now it sits unused in my knife box out in my shop.

I don't recall how long ago I got the Fin Wing, Ed. Probably in the '80s. It was made in Seki, Japan. They made some nice knives in Seki, and still do. I don't think Lakota is around anymore?

What a great thread! I have a couple older knives that I think might qualify for this category - got to get off my butt and shoot some pics.

Thanks all who've posted so far - I more a fan of fixed blades than folders it seems - really enjoying the pics!

I don't think they're around anymore either Gary. Someone may have bought the name but the original company has faded. Funny thing about Lakota knives was that in the San Diego, CA area they were sold in Fire Supply Stores where firemen and fire departments bought their equipment. I never saw them in a gun shop, sporting goods store, etc. in that area.

Are there specifications that determine a BnT? I am curious as I just had acustom caper made that to fits the bill, but then again, the larger customer I have has a blade shape more in line with a BnT, just a little longer? I'll post pics shortly.

For me, it always splits the difference between a caper and a fillet knife. With lots of room for fun variation in the middle.

Hey, I can do this....

Didn't think you would get away without seeing a Buck did you ?

Been away from the interwebs all day, and it fun to see all the new additions to this thread!

That's a pretty darn good description.

Darn it JK you stirred a sad memory. I don't have the knife, I have the fly reel and the shells, and I had the Herter's Duck call from the 70's, maybe even the late 60's, but gave it away, hope the call is happy where it is.......here it was in old photo.

In a pinch a 301 can gut about anything....I know one of you will want to know what the fish cleaning knife in background is.
Its a is a A.B. Ferrator, Sweden, no model number. Do I do a better photo of it ?
