The Bird & Trout Thread

Mine is long gone, but the Gerber B&T was a great knife. Perfect size and blade shape, the spoon was handy as well.

I guess my Rapala 4" filet knife was the best replacement I found.

Looks can be deceiving,Fedor did not look like most folks idea of a badass, and there was a guy in SFOD-D back in the late eighties that was nicknamed the accountant.I thought the earlier sleeker Trout and Bird was the elegant one,but after I got this one in'08 and actually used it the goofy looking top edge made sense. That angle keeps your knuckles clear when using that heavy duty edge to cut the wings off of dove breasts, heads, feet, and tails off squirrels, and the heads and tails if need be off trout. The main edge is spared and from bones and such and the tip is keen enough to pick an individual arm hair and cut it off.I didn't think that the stainless versions could compete with the O-1 but I was pleasantly suprised there also. All this needs to be ideal for me is a pouch type sheath,I don't like the tact that you have to use your eyes and carefully resheath it lest you cut the keeper strap or mouth of the sheath. It has rendered many trout for the skillet that I caught with my 26 y/o Sage 4711 LL that this LRH fits and many bushytails doves and few ducks and one 8 point deer Ihave killed with this 1942 Ithaca model 37 20 ga. That I have shot since 1970(papaw shot it for 28 years before that.)I ain't one to give up on a tool just because it shows a little age.

These two would work well. A pair of Toby`s Knives. Top one is in CPMS30V, and purpleheart, and is slightly stretched. Bottom one is in 154CM, and maple burl.

Among pocket knives, the Shrade Walden Muskrat has nice thinner blades for BT stuff and

the GEC single blade #48 flat grind is also good.

willis, there's definitely a method to the madness of the Randall 8's top edge. Readers of Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft will recognize the usefulness for dressing birds and squirrels.

Very nice stuff everyone. Kinda surprised at the lack of a Case M3.... hope to change that soon. ;)

Merry Mad Monk, Love that Western with the red handle. Nice.

These little Western Boulder 28 and 48 patterns have always looked attractive. They are a highly sought after and tough to find for a bargain. They are roughly 6" and 8" knives.

These are my two. The first is a Phil Wilson Bird and Trout. It is a larger blade at 4", but it is so thin and narrowly tapered that it could easily handle fish. The second is a Joe Calton "Fish Knife" as he calls it. Which is a great take on a B&T I think. It doesn't look as pretty as the below picture anymore due to being used.

I have a Phil Wilson B&T coming up soon, the 3.5". Phil makes a fantastic knife, superb edge geometry.

You will be very pleased. I wouldn't mind getting the smaller version myself. Right now though I have my sights set on a Smoke Creek.
