The BK15 30 day EDC challenge

I'm glad you're still using it for, well... as you said, cutting what needs cut. There's no better way to understand any knife, than to just use it a lot.

And I'm glad you're still loving it. I'm not one bit surprised. I have a sneaky suspicion that knife will never stray too far from your hands, no matter how many other knives you may have in the future... if I had to guess right now, I'd say you will likely keep that BK15 near and dear for many a year.

I agree completely! There's nothing better for knife users, knifemakers, and the whole knife industry than seeing youngsters use and enjoy good knives responsibly.

Thanks JT! I actually told my dad a couple days ago I'll probably keep EDCing it after the 30 days are up. :D Might actually have to extend the challenge for another few days because a friend is gonna be coming up staying at the house for a few days (starting the day the 30 days are up), and we're going to a motorcycle race and spending the weekend, then most likely camping on the mountain for a few days after we get back from the race. So, likely, I won't have a whole lot of time to post new updates, much less my final "review" of it, and I think some more woods use would benefit the thread a lot.

RECENT USE:

Still, just EDC stuff. Used the pommel to hammer an old cellar door latch that would close fully into position. Carved some wood, attempted more feather sticks.

Again, a lot of random pics in here.

A fossil. Some time in the past (I assume during, or maybe before, and for a long while after Noah's Flood) the valley I live in was a massive lake. Even if it's unlikely, it's cool to imagine that some type of huge aquatic dinosaur could have swam/swum/swimmed around right here.

A cool walnut.

Necklace my dad and I made with the bullet casing that I shot the first coyote I trapped by myself with and a coyote tooth (not the tooth of the one I killed, but... you know).

What started out as my trying to make a featherstick and ended with my trying to get more of the pattern in the wood on the shavings because it looked pretty.

Finally, knife pics. :o :D The other necklace in the pics has Joshua: 1:9b on the back.

The same walnut from before, a day later and turned over. It looks like an owl or a mask.

A bit of a feather stick. Not very good though.

CONCLUSION:

The BK15 has become my favorite knife. It beat out the BK9 for the spot..

Wide range of stratigraphical units in VA, if you would want to dig further. Not a lot of dino-aged stuff though. The beaches are well known for their Paleogene and Neogene outcrops, though the conservation of those fossils are pretty different from what you're showing. The Paleo- through Neogene fossils from the region are usually deposited in sands or clays, whereas the matrix you're showing is clearly solid (sandstone? not really clear due to the blur).
Lot's of Devonian outcrops or older in VA too, I suspect you'd find something useful in that direction, given the surrounding matrix.

Nice pics too! What camera are you using?

Thanks for the info Gshark! It is sandstone, and most of the fossils that I've found here are in sandstone or other rocks, not sand or clay. I've also found fossilized plants and fossilized tunnels that worms made if you'd be interested in seeing those.

Thanks! It's a Nikon Coolpix S6800.

A long while AFTER Noah's Flood? ya mean like last year?! ;)

It takes a lot longer than that to form fossils. Like millions of years.

And the valley you live in is relatively 'young' and most likely formed by the retreat of the glaciers at the end of the last ice age. Less than 50,000 years ago so no dinos.

But, for seashells to be there, the land must have been underwater for a significant period of time. Like a large shallow sea with plenty of room for dino swimmers. ;)

Geology is fascinating.

Told ya! ;)

And excellent work! Well done!

True, usually. That's what I was aiming for with my previous post as well, but left it implicit :D. Might as well just throw it out there since we're staying civil and all!

Also true. What you often see is that those periods of massive erosion (cfr. glaciers moving, sea retreating or reclaiming land) result in a deposit that mixes older with newer sediment. Hence, the pictured shell prints show lot's of wear and were probably exposed because of said geological factors, but originate from older strata than the actual deposit.

Total derail of this thread though. Keep those pics coming, Noswad, they're EXCELLENT! Love the stuff you're showing. Not only the knife, but the different landscapes you're showing are very interesting since they seem to vary so much. Cool beans man, cool beans.

Thanks Gshark.

Not gonna get much use out of it this week, super busy with non-knifey stuff.

well.. you got to eat, right?
Why don´t you use them cool beans and cook something over a fire?

Because the next 4 nights/evenings I'll be in another county doing a play, and the rest of the time I'll be relaxing and resting and studying my lines so I don't fall asleep or quit talking during the middle of the show. :D

..get them lines in order and rock that show!

Thanks! I think I've got them down pretty good. I was slow one one or two but never missed one at practice last night. Hopefully all goes well tonight. I get to eat an oatmeal cream pie during the play too. :D

As was already said, great thread!! Made me strip my 15. I hope the folks at KA-BAR get a run on BK5 & 15 sales and keep 'em in the lineup! NW, they should have you a trophy made with a 15 and you BH#! I can vision it on a display shelf in the cabin. Thanks for all your time and efforts Lil' Bro!

Thanks!

That would be awesome, but I doubt that will happen. :D

Sorry for the drought. Been busy.

USE RECENTLY:

Not much. Haven't been able to have it or any other knife on me for a bit for the sake of practicality, but it's always been near. A couple days ago, I used it to cut a tree down.

CONCLUSION:

Still love it. It's way tougher than people give it credit for. I hate seeing people say that their only BK15 is on kitchen duty or their steak knife. It deserves to be beat on, it craves to be beat on. Beat on it!

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Due to not being active for a while, I have decided to extend the EDC challenge until Monday the 29th. Expect some camping use in the following weeks!

Appreciate the pictures... I jus recently purchased 3 of the 15's. Never had one before. But I am looking forward to processing game with them. My son immediately strapped one on to his pack. I like the feel and the sweep of the blade.

BK15 vs. tree? Tree never had a chance! That was actually pretty impressive to see that big hunk missing from that tree.

I'll say it one mo' gin......sweet pics and amazing thread!

i don't have mine in front of me to compare, but that looks like a pretty sizeable tree. Nice job.
