The Bowies of the Blade Show - 2008 Edition

Roger,
It was great meeting you in person, and in hearing your opinions on some of what we saw togerther... And I really appreciate your review - since I was only there for three hours, and most of the tables had been seriously depleted by then; your review and pics have really helped me appreciate what little I got to see!
Hope to run into you again at another show!

Great to meet you Joe. 3 hrs. is better than nothing, but dang, that's a seriously compressed look at a seriously huge show.

Roger

Great review and pictures Roger. It was a pleasure to meet you even though you were busy and we didn't get time to talk.

It was my first time at Blade and my mind was definitely on OVERLOAD. I did see a good number of the knives you posted and also, I was very impressed with the fit and finish of Tommy Gann's knives. He was an extremely nice guy as well.

Peter

It was great seeing everyone again this year and some new faces as well.

I thought I'd throw my five up here.....

Thanks again.

peter - nice meeting you too my friend.

J. - that was one heck of an impressive lineup. I don't recall any other tester going all damascus. Thanks for adding those in.

Roger

J. THANKS for posting those!!! You've been making really nice stuff for a long time, but you REALLY stepped it up big time with these.

AWESOME WORK J.!!! And congrats again my friend, I'm VERY happy for you!!!

Thanks guys. It was one part my pure love of etched steel and the second part a safety move. Anyone who has been in the judging room knows that the lighting there shows any little scratch that's there, even if you couldn't see it in several types of lighting before (AKA- evil magic lights). Even cleaning a polished guard with a new soft cotton cloth can leave scratches/swirls that don't look appealing in the judging room. Going all damascus on the blades was a no brainer for me, about 80% of the knives I do are damascus steel but, the hardware being either damascus or wrought iron was a joy both to look at and the fact that I could put a bit of oil on the knives, wipe them down and walk away with only the need to sweat the judging and not scratches, swirls and such that sometimes appear out of nowhere.

Hi All,

Bill Wiggins was kind enough to give me his table this year so I was a little harder to track down than usual. Here are the photos of my Journeyman knives, and the Peck Award knife. The quality isn't that great, but I had Point7 shoot them and will have better ones soon. If anyone's interested they can look at my knives at AcreMetalworks.com.There's lots of them on my Past Works page.

Thanks,
Fuad Accawi

This one with the 13 inch blade was the one that got the Peck.
The biggest thrill about getting this award was how proud my wife looked. Being a Full-Time maker is not always an easy path in life.

Ah, I remember seeing that Peck award knife Thursday night in the Pit when you were showing it to Burt Foster. Very impressive piece.

Roger

WoW, very nice.
Love that loooong sleek blade on the white stag handle fighter.
What's the blade length on that one?

Thanks Roger. Kevin, the blade length is about 13". Just under 1/4" thick at the ricasso and has a straight distal taper to the point. Light and fast. Balance point at the plunge line. The handle is elk.

Roger, as usual a great post and some very impressive knives. It was great to see you again. Hopefully it will be a shorter time between meetings. Again great to see you and great post.

Best regards

Brion and Diane

Roger thanks for the post. I did not realize who was taking pictures, it was very nice to meet you. It is hard putting faces to all on the forums. it was really nice sitting next to Brion and Diane. All those around were great company and all had great knives. Again Great Post and hope to see you again soon.

...can't let this thread die neither...

As usual, Roger always does a great job in reporting the shows. We had a great visit Sunday and got to do a show and tell of the knives we each have obtained over the past month and mostly from Blade 2008. Anyone wishing to view more about the Blade 2008 show could check out CKCA site www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com > Reviews > Blade show 2008 to see review plus 169 photos from the show. Poke around the website too.
