"The Boys Of Summer" (or..."Hiding In The Shadows")

Thomason,

I grew up in Brownsville in hot & humid deep south Texas so I know what you mean. We used to step into saunas in the summer just to cool off. ;)

Roll up your pants, boys, and mind where you step. The Texans are here!!! (Now you know why I'm wearing shorts. ;):p)

i wear shorts from april to oct. but could'nt bring myself to risk losing a beauty like yours on the job or street. knives like those are for showoff at the gun show or poker game elliot thanks for that fancy word [translucency] now i can one up on my brother.

Elliott, I'm glad that these custom makers have waiting lists so long that I know my attention span wouldn't keep my interest for the duration. If not, I'd be broke because of your pictures. What a fine collection.

What a great looking gaggle of pocket knives!
On related note I have no doubt it gets a tad warmish in the Carolinas but once summer comes to Tejas I can no longer carry a pocket knife. If you have one in your pocket and spend more than an hour or two outside in the sun, the heat treatment of the blade is completely toasted. I don't know how knives I ruined before I learned that lesson.

Now that is some kind of hot! :D;)

Dadgumit, Rob, I wish you'd told me that years ago. I always wondered why the steel in my knives was getting softer.

Nice lineup sir.
The Carbon Fiber Halfrich seams to me to be the epitome of lightweight summer carry. If you aren't careful you could find that one banging around in the washing machine after forgetting you had it on your pocket.
On second thought I doubt you could forget about something that special. Even if you don't feel it, you know it's there.

You have got to be kidding me!! You are, right???
Or I have no idea what hot is!!!
I know you know a bit about this, Rob; what temperatures will ruin the temper of steel?? And how do you achieve them in a pocket, without running for the nearest body of water!!

Wow, Elliott! Very generous of you! I'm definitely in for this one! Thanks for the chance!

Oh . . . (reads OP again) . . . wait a minute . . . what!? . . . awwwww, man, I thought this was another one o' them awesome giveaways! :p

Great lineup, my favorites: green G10 & red G10 - very interesting & attractive handle shape on the red G10.

. . . I like to carry knives that won't cause my shorts to puddle around my ankles. ;)

Do you think that image would be work safe? ;)

Feel free to add images of your own summertime companions.

I'll see what I can dig up for images . . .

thx - cpr

I pretty much carry the same pocketknives year-round, regardless of season. But summertime to me means the outdoors, whether it's out on the trails or in front of a grill. Here are a couple of knives that I like to tote on hikes, along with a new camp knife I just picked up.

Here is a stag handled knife and fork set that I like to use for those summertime barbecues.

Got a shadow by Mr Menefee that I really enjoy.
Snagged another shadow by Reese off the forums last week that is sitting at the P.O. right now. Going to have to con a friend to stand in line and wait for it. I feel sorry for my friends of late. :D.

Well...as a native born son of Texas, born in the El Paso Empire, complete with certification signed by Chris Fox...Skipper of the Rio Grande and Keeper of the Wagon Tongue, I too understand the heat that comes from living a couple miles from the sun. I must say however my knife carrying habits don't change too much during the summer. Still carry a belt pouch for a larger traditional locking blade and a smaller social slippie in the pocket. Today will be the AG Russell Swell Center Sunfish in the pouch and a Ken Coats 4" jack riding next to my wallet.

You got it!

Now, I don't tend to wear shorts, even in the summer, so I carry basically the same knife or knives all the time. Mainly don't wear shorts 'cause I don't want folks to stare at my pale skinny legs. Also, we have mosquitoes the size of buzzards here in Texas so I try and bare as little skin as possible to avoid them. One of them things latches on to you and you'll need a transfusion. ;)

Chris, you get an "A" for effort in any case...

Fellas, let's try to keep this thread somewhat on track...lightweight knives for summer carry (if you would). Thanks...

(We can display other EDC options or categories in separate threads.)

I hear ya, 'mano. But I've gotta go with those Alaskan mosquitoes for size and tenacity.
(Though I've suffered some while riding cross TX on my motorcycle in years past. Even stopped at the emergency room in Breckenridge. (Although not mosquito related. ;))

Here's a few that get used quite a bit around here in the warmer months. Ironically, I just realized that most of what we EDC around here in the summer doesn't have bolsters.

(My son's knives) Case Sodbuster Jr., Camillus
Scout, and a Victorinox Classic:

(Mine) Spyderco Tenacious, Boker Arbolito large
Sodbuster, Case yellow CV Sodbuster Jr., and a

Elias gets to carry his when the need arises, under supervision ;). Mom has a No. 6 Opinel that goes to work for lunch duty, and a pink Vic Classic as well. I have several small summer slippies, and the only ones with bolsters are a small Case yellow CV Stockman and an Old Timer 8OT.

The big Boker was a giveaway from Blues here. It's my strawberry knife every spring now.

(edited to add - my Photobucket account is goofy - I resized everything, but the Tenacious & Soddie pic didn't take. (?) I'll figure it out & try again later.)

Nice knives, Chris. I'm really glad to hear that the Boker is serving you so well.

Thanks - I see knives like the Boker at the Farmer's Markets here pretty regularly. That little Case yellow CV is my current favorite, though it is kind of hefty for a little bolster-less knife. It feels good in the pocket, though.

What was the inspiration for the handle shape of the red G-10 handled knife in the OP?

thx - cpr
