The Chinese Made “D2” Explosion

I was chatting with the head of a newer Chinese knife company and they are quite adamant about using real materials in their knives. According to him real D2 is imported and is much costlier than Chinese made steels and therefore the odds of getting real D2 in a $20 knife are virtually nil. He is just as opposed to the dishonesty exhibited by many Chinese knife makers as we are and referred to DHGate as a "refuge for counterfeiters" or something like that. He guarantees that the steels used in his company's knives are genuine and welcomes testing. It boils down to honesty. Reputable companies are honest and will label a steel according to what it really is. Dishonest companies might use a Chinese analog that performs similarly or worse yet use a far cheaper and inferior steel and mislabel it to generate sales or jack up the price. There are honest people in the US and China and there are dishonest people in the US and China. This is just something one person in the industry told me so take it for what it is. I think the kind of testing Cedric and Ada does is very helpful in giving us an idea of how various steels compare to each other under somewhat consistent testing.

No, I wish I could have attended Shot Show. It was online. I'm not trying to be coy I just don't think I need to go into specifics. It's just something I was told by one person in the Chinese knife game and also my opinion on the matter. I do have one of his knives in D2 and interestingly when I placed it in boiling hot water to try to loosen the loctite on the screws I got spotting on the blade which only came off using mustard since I didn't know what else to use without scratching the blade.

I know what you mean, I have seen a lot of Chinese knife makers using D2 in their knives, esepcially Realsteel. I like the D2 over other steels for its edge retention thought. Actually when looking on knife news today I seen they have brought a new knife out again with D2. Its called banshee i think, looks like a Karambit, could be quite cool! http://knifenews.com/real-steel-to-release-banshee-utility-hawkbill/

One of the main companies using this Chinese D2 is the Auction Company KMA cutlery I own three of their blades don't worry I got a super good price on each one... but the D2 is fine! although I'm sure I'm AMERICAN D2 is a lot stronger

Last entry on this thread is September, 2017 -- more than a year ago. That said, and having just recently been looking into D2 because I bought a Schrade Uncle Henry Hunter from SKMW, I found these articles/links. The Knives Illustrated link
answers more questions than I thought about asking.

The Hudson Steel link provides discussion along with some charts/graphs

I have a knife that is the same design as the Ganzo FH11. It does not have any markings other than M390 on the blade. I'm trying to identify it. If anyone knows who's knife the Ganzo FH11 is a copy of, I would like to find that out. Thanks all!

I'm pretty sure they've changed factories and none of the D2 seem to be rip offs any more than most knives.

I'm not a big flipper fan so I haven't held any.

Maybe it was a copy of something....More likely it's just rebranded from teh same factory and printed with m390 on it

The majority of folks here don't buy fake crap, and no, I personally can't speak about this. Buy knives from reputable makers through reputable dealers, it's not that complicated...

You're welcome;)
After reading this thread its clear you guys have enough technical knowledge to sound smart, but not enough to be smart about steel quality, manufacture processes and costs. Yall are full of very very biased opinions based exclusively on your own feelings. D2 Chinese steel has been tested and most meets or exceeds European and US D2. And aflak duck, you're pretentious as hell. My $50 knife has better hardware than your Benchmade. Just saying.

Did you really just join 10 mins ago to bring up a 2/3 year old thread to tell the The Aflac Duck The Aflac Duck how you feel about him?

Also, I’m not a fan of chinese D2, D2 in general, or chinese knives. But to each their own.
