The Choil/Ricasso thing

>>Either give me one that's big enough that I can get my whole index finger in there when I'm choking up on a knife (a la Randalls) or make it a small "sharpening choil." I've got no use for anything in between.<<

Couldn't agree more.

I prefer the rounded choil as I believe it looks better on more designs, however the more squared-off style isn't a deal breaker for me:

The more squared-off choil works too:

Kind of a mixture of each:

What has been called a sharpening choil:

Then you have the hybrid design where the rounded choil is cut off short, so to speak and forms a point where it meets the edge like the first knife in Kyle's post and a few that a certain Mr. Hanson has done. That is the style that I have come to favor in most of my recent knives, but I do use othe styles when it strikes my fancy. I use the choil shape that I feel fits the style of knife. I would be inclined to and have used the one that STeven likes if I were making a Maryland style knife.

Kyle, since I've got your attention, I've been thinking about commissioning an ABS master piece-style dagger from you. (If you actually want to make that one of your five pieces, I've got no problem with that.) PM me if you're interested.

AFAIK, you can PM Kyle if you are interested....knock off the thread drift, if you don't mind.

I have said that I prefer that it not be on folders.....I have not experienced using folders the way I am referring to larger fixed blades in the outdoor sense explained above....have you?

Heck no; I meant purely from an aesthetic standpoint.

I don't know what you call it, Jon....but I don't like it (although it is recognized to be a superior shape for a hunting knife, and a demonstration of forging mastery.)

I have to admit I agree with this--although I know this transition was made exactly as it was intended, it always looks to me like something didn't line up correctly. That said I love Mr. Fisk's Sendero pattern.

Still digging for pictures...

I see some Voorhees influences in that Gedraides . . . or is it the other way 'round? You're the pro from Dover, let me know your thoughts on that.

If you mean the choil region, I don't know.....if you mean something else, I probably don't care.

If you want to start a Gedraitis/Voorhies(Les, right?) comparison thread....start one....just not in this thread.

Best Regards,

STeven

Yes, it's Les, and yes, I was referring to "the choil region," as you put it.
