Amazing looking knives. I really need to settle on a CKF to add to the rotation.

I've got that type of liner foam in a small Nanuk case, but I'd like to put it in a larger case too. Do you know where to buy just that style of foam without a case? Or I might just pick up a new case with it in there.

That foam is going to be specifically cut for a specific make and model of case. AFAIK, there is no universal insert with knife pockets for installation into any hard case. You will likely just need to buy a case with the foam already installed. Nanuk makes the best hard case imo, better than Pelican, better than anything I've ever seen or experienced. Pricey of course, but that's because it's the best. Will a cheaper one do the job? Absolutely. I use waxed canvas rolls and leather folios for my knives, but I exclusively use Nanuk for all my drone and fpv stuff. One of my friends in the knife hobby just bought a Casematix hard case with knife pockets, reasonable pricing and does the job just fine. The Harbor Freight Apache cases do just fine for the purpose too, those will come with pick-n-pluck foam that you can configure for knives.

Yeah, the pick-n-pluck foam works ok, but doesn't look half as cool as the other firmer foam. This may be one of those questions that AI might be good at answering. It might get me on the right path anyway. What I'll probably end up doing is buying another Nanuk case the next size up from my small 909. On the Nanuk site, I'm not even seeing larger cases with that foam, so that's why I'm asking about BrainVirus' case.

Nalpak. They make inserts for a couple of brands, but mainly Pelican cases. You can buy the foam inserts alone or with the case.

Edit: I think they also do inserts for some apache cases

Thank you. The brand name helps with the search.

I found the one that holds 40 knives on the site, but oddly they only give the depth of the foam. They don't give the other dimensions so that you know what case it fits in. I'll figure it out. edit - it's for the Pelican Vault 200

Guard Dog foam inserts. Canadian company so has a lot of Nanuk specific options. Available as inserts only or with the case. Also do custom if you want.

i agree pick n pluck doesn't look as professional. my nanuk cases for drones are custom made for specific make and model, same with the transmitter. i have some older Condition 1 cases(which I highly recommend, very good cases and competitive pricing) that I use the pick n pluck because there isn't any custom foam inserts for my use case.
 
Check out Case Club for pelican style cases with pre-cut foam inserts. Great bang for your buck and they are available on the Big River.
 
I figured this might be the place to ask, does anyone know how the heat treatments are on CKFs? Obviously they're produced in China, but that could mean anything nowadays. I've owned some nice CKFs, but never used them enough to get an organic feel for how well the steel performed.

I think they can be a little variable, but never "terrible". Just kinda meh. We just don't have a large sample size and don't have alot of data on production date. They recently tested 63hrc on m390 which is amazing, but outside of that everything has been 60hrc(for m390, s110v, and s90v, all 60). The link below is a active project and gets bigger every day, very good resource. All the testing is done by a professional that does it as his job, he is an active member of the knife community and tests these at work with the same professional protocols during afterhours. An incredible asset to the community and should be supported. He is now working with brands directly to get samples, but primarily these are coming from other collectors that are curious and want to do a solid. There is even a member here that buys extremely expensive and desirable knives, to immediately send for testing. I actually own a couple that I bought from him.

The inconsistency is interesting. Those models in M390 really aren’t that far removed time wise…

I think they are doing pretty decent, not great, not terrible, just decent. I would be curious about their HT protocol though, whether it's done in-house or by a third party. KJ(the CKF factory) is a bit mysterious so we may never know. If they can reliably hit 63 on m390 though, that's pretty awesome.

I have a suspicion, though I will never be able to confirm it, that the same factories are making parts and pieces for a lot of these brands. That's how it works in the vast majority of other industries; you have the "basic" factories that are the biggest and turnout the most quantity, so they can do things the cheapest.

As for the HT, I will mention that CKF tends not to make any kind of HRC promises, so there's a distinct possibility they're treating to a jumble of different values with an inconsistent protocol.

I do have to be real though, I never carried any of my CKFs (don't own one currently), as a user, so I'm genuinely just speculating without even the aid of anecdotal evidence.
