The Contenders...

Gotta love that old school Ratweiler.

I'd like to see a Heavy Heart join the mix. Very nicely done overall.

:D :D

Definitely take Eric up on that Chopweiler loan -- or I could loan you one of mine. I'd like to see the RW and the CW go up 'head to head.'

Actually, just traded for a ChopWeiler. And it so happens that I have two untouched 2x4s still available. One is saved for my HOGFSH when it returns from Garth, the other will be for the ChopWeiler.

Jeepnut,
Great review and pics. Thanks for posting them.

Drop me a note at ratknives@insightbb.com so I can give you the info you need to send the M6 in. We want to check it out.

Also if you are planning anymore testing I have a loaner Chopweiler that would like to participate. ;)

That is what I like to see and hear!!!!!

..... On both counts. ;)

Excellent. Thanks.

And it's all your fault if I have to sell INFI now to get one. :p:D:thumbup:

TL don't feel bad about doing what you need to to get a RW. They are that good. If I had to limit myself ( God forbid) to one knife to do everything it would be the Old school RW.

All awesome knives and great testing. I had an Old School RW but much prefer the BM-E in my smaller hands. Just seems like I have better control and more "punch" with each chop. I am very much looking forward to the comparison of old school Rat and Chopweiler!! :D

You know I had an original RW. In fact I was on the 6 month waiting list from the Swamp and got it directly from Eric and staff. But by the time I got it I already had a BM-E, I think, and didn't give the RW a fair shake. :o But I have always like the looks of it and the reviews it gets.

Its telling to me that everyone compares the OLD school RW with Bigger knives. Much bigger knives actually. The thing is you can!! That RW chops way out of its class.

I bought a ASH1....I don't hate them.... Kind of cool looking. But next time I get 3 or 4 hundred to drop on a knife it won't be a ASH1 I tell you that.

I am REALLY looking forward to the SAR and the MUKs. I really like this trend towards useful practical knives with Busse flair and materials!! Long Live Busse Knives and change!!!! New knives! New Ideas! No regrets!

Lets not detract from the coolness of this thread and the hard work the OP put into a COOL comparison!

Sorry to say, but I sold away, 'your' RW. :( or else I would sell it back to you. YOU started me on this road to financial ruin. I have kept a very cool satin RW. :D

Anyone have a side by side pic of the RW and CW?
Here ya go sir! And sorry for the crappy pics, I was rushing it...

The Old School RatWeiler is a little longer and it has a thumb ramp and finger notch behing the choil. Can't wait to try one out next week...

Phil,

Are the saber grinds on the RW and CW about the same height. They are similar enough that I doubt there would be any performance difference. It may just come down to whichever hande is more comfy for your hands.

Great pics Jeepnut. Thanks. Wow. Pretty close. How different do the handles feel? I like the blade shape on the CW better but the handle better on the RW.

Ban,
I have both. The RW grind is 1 3/8" high on a 1 13/16" blade. The CW grind is 1 3/16" high on a 1 3/4" blade.

Thanks! They are proportionally close enough that the performance should be the same unless there is a big edge geometry difference.

Thanks, great comparison, some guys may argue about the scientific methods used, but I think you did a great job and the results are there for the taking.
I didn't think my ASH would be a great chopper but still interested as a general camp knife. Tyrkon's video shows a ASH chopping thru a 2x4 respectively. Busse's rule in any config., style, size.

No it did not. It was hands down the biggest heaviest knife in the small knife section. Frankly its not a small knife. It should have been compared against the Old school RatW which wiped the floor with it.

ASH1 are not good choppers. This test mirrors my results.

I will state up front that I am under-impressed with the ASh1.

To big and clunky for fine work, poorly balanced and handled for heavy chopping. Seriously..... Name on thing it does better than other Busse offerings besides empty your wallet.

I agree!!
ASH1 is not for me.. I rather have a SHe or FSH over that blade any day:thumbup:
