The cool factor

Mike, Life was a lot simpler back then. Only one thing on the mind and that was to make it for another day. Do you remember Mister Wizard? 50's

Not surprisingly I suppose, Mr Wizard was my hero, and hugely responsible for my interest in science. I watched his shows ardently, and tried to duplicate his simplest demonstrations at home. Don Herbert passed last year. RIP.

I don't know if this illustrate's Tai's point or disproves it (I get confused a lot when reading Tai's posts- he seems to argue both ends against the middle), but the biggest knife romantic I know is Ed Fowler (know anyone else who refers to "Lady knife"?)- he is also one of the most scientific makers I know (how many others use an electron microscope to see how their ht is working?).

Ed's a true pioneer! :)

If absolute zero is cool then it follows that....

Absolute zero is a theoretical and impossible state, so it is fair to say that no one is "cool".

No, not necessarily,... just because it's only a theoretical state, doesn't mean it's a completely impossible state... no one knows that yet do they?

... just thinking out loud...

Hey! It's theoretically possible!

I don't know about the assumption science hurts romance or coolness. Kevin may be one of our most scientifically minded smiths on this forum but look at his work. Swords, Daggers and even what looks to be some fantasy work (although they may be historically correct and I am just mistaking them for fantasy). Even his website looks somewhat mystical. Certainly his swords are both more romantic and cool than my somewhat standard hunters and B&T knives.

does that mean i can claim that I am theoretically cool :D

Hey! It's theoretically possible!

Actually, I think they consider it theoretically impossible. :D Nerd speak to follow: All matter has a zero point energy which is the lowest possible energy for the system and cannot be removed according to quantum mechanics, and thus absolute zero is impossible to reach in a given system.

Of course, all you have to do is invent your own theories to justify your outcomes. Say for instance, all the universe is made of of infinitely tiny little strings which are themselves composed of tiny anvils and hammers....

I absolutely agree with this statement, Tai. Remember guys, not only was Leonardo da Vinci a revolutionary scientist and inventor, he also did some pretty darn good painting and sculpture. :D

Gavin

Too bad you get some jerk offs who can't see the beuty in both together and seperately, and only see it in one or the other.

Da Vinci was the man!

You mean, impossible but not improbable,... or is it the other way around?

Actually, I have absolutely no problem wrapping my brain around the ZERO concept,... theoretically...

Cool, huh?

I just got my first forged bowie after a couple years of using the best quality production versions and I was SHOCKED at how much better the forged bowie cut.
I think that if we had some good scientific method about the performance differences between forged and stock removal blades then forged knives would get a lot more respect.

I also like the way Ed Fowler uses scientific method to test his blades.

Where would we be theoretically without the ZERO concept?

… Without ZERO, how could we possibly theoretically ever get to points #1, #2 and #3.?

ZERO is cool! :)

Maybe Ed or Kevin will chime in here... :)

Geometry cuts. Forging does not make a knife cut better.

Theoretically it is possible that anyone can, at times, "overflow with cool". Conversely, it is also theoretically possible that anyone can, at times, just "overflow". :D

I think that it is the quenching that makes knives "cool" :D

but also remember you don't want your knives to be to "cool" before you quench them or they wont be cool in the field .

Where o where has this thread gone.

Actually, the first ferrous tools and blades made by mankind were from meteoritic iron through stock reduction and since stock reduction is also a part of the smithing process/processes, I think it can safely be considered an aspect of metalsmithing. However, a cold caveman sitting in a cold cave and rubbing or splitting a cold stone with a cold stone, just doesn't seem that "cool"... Where’s the romance in that? :D

We've sure come a long way since then... :)

Kipling had your back in a poem called The King.

"Farewell Romance!" the Cave-man said;
"With bone well carved he went away.
"Flint arms the ignoble arrowhead
"And jasper tips the spear today.
"Changed are the Gods of Hunt and Dance,
"And He with these. Farewell, Romance!
