The cult of the peanut.

Everybody loves some peanuts!!

That's what I'd love to see more of; bails on 'nuts. As small as the peanut is, it would make a great keychain knife.

Well one way or another I screwed up the edge of my G10 Peanut whilst learning how to sharpen free hand and haven't been able to get it as sharp as my Opinel/SAKs, but after reading this story I'm going to give it yet another try today.

Carl,

Have you thought about giving the Case Small Amber Bone Texas Jack a try? It's a bit bigger than the Peanut, but the springs on mine seem easier than the 'nuts that I've tried out.

im left handed and hold the knife in my right hand, open with the left nail and switch it over to the left for use.

Hope nobody minds me showing off this old Camillus peanut. I had to have a peanut in my collection and ended up with this one.

How could one possibly mind seeing that?!? Great lookin' Camillus!

Wow guess I'm one of those goofy ones. :) I always hold the knife in my left hand and open with the right thumb and then switch and use it right handed. Just tried opening with the left thumb it feels wierd to me. :)

That's what I do too. Always have; guess I just never learned to do it "right". Although I can open it "correctly", it just doesn't feel right since I have been doing it "wrong" all my life.

I sat here playing with a slippie that happens to be handy and I can do it either way, but I have to think about opening it with my left thumb. If I don't consciously think about doing it that way, I'll open it with my right thumb. I just realized that I have always kept my slip joints in my left pocket so that I will have it in my left hand to open. I carry my one hand openers in my right pocket. Never ever thought about it, it just happened instinctively or at least unconsciously.

Carl, you can get used to doing it with your right thumb. I find that when the blade comes open, it is very simple to reposition your right hand onto the handle. You will have to "train" yourself to do it that way, but it will work.

Which just goes to illustrate that there is no right way, only a way that is right for each of us as individuals. (Heck, it's good to know I'm in such good company. :p)

Oh, I have no doubt I'm going to get used to doing that way. I'm already getting there just because it's is easier to grip the handle well with my left thumb strait, and use my right thumb to bend and open using the nail nick. The right thumb bends just fine, and doesn't hurt when pressure is put on it in a bent postion. Your idea about carrying the knife in the left pocket is a good one, as it places the knife right where its got to be from the start. Good idea, Ed!

I couldn't agree more (tiny toothpick needs a bail also).
That peanut with a bail is awesome!

As far as opening, I am left-handed and naturally open my knives with my right thumb. I have become an ambidextrous knife-user but still prefer to open with my right thumb, although I use my left-thumb fairly often also, just because I feel like I should :o

I am right handed, and have always opened mine with the knife in my right hand, and left index finger/thumb on nail nick.

Count me as one of the goofy ones as well...I'm right handed and I've always felt more comfortable holding slipjoints in my left hand and using my right thumbnail to open them.

Welcome back Carl. While I have carried a many different slippie patterns the P was the original for me. My grandfather collected them and I am hoping to receive his collection eventually. IIRC he had somewhere in the couple hundred Ps and many other wonderful knives I have not played with in quite a long time.

A couple hundred peanuts and other knives?

How many of them are 'nuts?

Oh man, you know I'm only 4 1/2 hours up the road from you?

No, the heck with gas milage, make that 3 1/2 hours!

:D

Carl.

Carl, you could always keep a Peanut in your pocket even if you never opened it. It would still be there for you to play with.

Oh I can open it, no problem with my right hand.

I've been working with this little oblong rubber ball about half the size of a tenis ball, and firm but not real hard. I keep squeezing it and working with it while around the house. It seems to be helping in keeping things loosed up and getting better. I do both hands, but my left thumb is not going to get much better, so I keep up the ball and keep what left in good shape.

The things we go through to keep opening slippies.

Carl.

You guys are so refreshing. I am so tired of huge folders. I really like the small light stuff. And does everything I need with no extra weight!!
