The Deer Hunter - Buck 118 Personal (permanent thread - keep adding)

I was finally able to finish the handle on my 118 last night. The fit and finish are not what I had originally envisioned, especially with the pommel. I was not able to find 5/32” aluminum rod for the pommel pin so I had to sand 3/16” rod down to fit the hole. The knife was definitely a user and had some cosmetic issues when I bought it. I then managed to booger the hole up a little when removing the old pin. I was not able to peen the pin as much as I wanted to try and cover the damage. I really like the feel of the stacked leather. After a final sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper and coating with Sno Seal, the handle is extremely smooth. I wasn’t expecting the handle to feel this good. Now that I know what not to do, I wouldn’t mind trying it again. I need to find another beater 100 series first though. Overall, I am happy with the results and cannot wait to start using the knife. I will probably buy a new 105 sheath from Buck since I cannot find an economical 118 sheath anywhere.

Ha ha ha thanks for reviving this classic thread. In a time where many of my unused knives, mainly Bucks are just ogled by me as collectors i consider dusting them off and reboxing them not so much to sell myself but making it easier for family to do so.
Already told my boys to make sure they don’t go for $5 at a garage sale. Should keep them busy on ebay lol.
Rereading this thread now has me thinking about searching for an older one. Thanks Guys.

So seller said 1972-1985. The sheath isn’t the flap over but the Snoopy marked 118 which honestly i like better as if i’m carrying it i like that knife is visible. Just not sure when/what years Buck used the Snoopy.

They are probably an overlooked design by many hunters. I stumbled on a Case xx 216-5, the 5" version at a blanket sale during a traditional archery gathering and found it to be my favorite deer knife. Long enough to get down in the blood to cut away the diaphragm and short enough to get up in the neck. The only shortcoming I found with these thin blades is it is harder to cut the brisket for me. For that, I always liked my Gerber Gator's serrated section. I believe if it had been a Buck 118 I'd have bought it instead.

Old Hunter Old Hunter The sheath is like the one in your #90 thread on here. Since you said you bought yours new I am fairly confident mine is most likely correct. At least 50/50

It came a week early. I would post a picture but i keep getting Oooops I've reached my allowed attachments? Never had that happen? Any way it’s an outstanding 118. Almost 100%. A little minor damage on the top of the blade opposite side of the edge. I may be able to polish it out.

Maybe a moderator can give me the reason I can’t post a picture all of a sudden?
If i’ve reached my maximum number of allowed attachments please tell how i can fix it?
I know if you max your PM’s you are allowed you can delete to make room?

David, I'm not a mod, but information (and a lot of discussion) about the attachment limit issue can be found in the tech help section. Here is one relevant thread from there:

The jist is, settings were incorrect (set to unlimited for everyone) for quite some time. Then when the settings were corrected to the established limits, many of the long time users found themselves way over the limit. Most weren't aware that there was supposed to even BE a limit (I wasn't). Spark Spark has asked everyone not to go deleting all their pictures, until he has time to find a solution. I haven't heard any recent updates.
Hope this helps.

The middle spacer was out of alignment by maybe 1-2 mm. You could see where it once was aligned. I’m like no big deal, but then after looking at it for a while an thought just a whack at just the right angle on our coffee table might just do the trick. Pop! And alignment has been achieved. If i could post a picture it would make more sense.

I’ve really enjoyed this thread. I found a nice Buck 118 Personal (along with the Case) at a resale shop this afternoon. I really like the fit and finish of this knife. It’s in good shape and is a 2 Line Inverted model - 1967-72 I guess. Here we go down the Buck fixed blade rabbit hole …
