The ethics of selling knives

The "I need the money/$5 price tag is a bit of a giveaway, ain't it? I am asking $150-300 for my knives and I can't be in a position to "need the money" at this stage.Regardless of whether he is a kid or not, perhaps he should STOP hanging out with anyone who needs such a "tool" and start hanging out with guys who actually make knives. Funny as it may sound, we are a much better class of miscreant:eek::D

I think Joe summed it up well.

That doesn't look like a knife to me. Knives are meant to cut things. That looks like a stabbing weapon like a prison shank. Anyone who buys that is only going to use it as a weapon. It certainly doesn't look like it would do much utility work. I don't see any knife enthusiast or knife user or collector buying that. There is no purpose for that knife other than to do BAD things. Calling it a knife is bad for the knife community. Stop selling those things.

I don't think any maker should make a knife with the intention of selling it to someone who is going to use to injure another person. Knives are tools, and you made a shank -the sole purpose of a shank is to f&(k someone up. Don't you have a conscience? :(

The fact that J.MacDonald hasn't posted on this thread seems to sum up its lack of worth. There is nothing in the "knife" ,its quality,or its makers comments that is worthy of comment.
I think the Mods need to lock this and let the kiddies go to bed.

I havent read this whole thread, but my thoughts are this: By posing this question you have shown that you are ethical (in my view) Most of the knives you sell are going to be put up for display on a study wall or in a glass cabinet. If someone is buying a knife cos they want it for crime, and you dont sell it to them, then they will just go to the next guy who will sell it to them. You cant control what people intend doing with it. Keep doing what you do.

There's always the disclaimer I see on knives -- "I, as the maker, am not responsible for any harm that may comes to you or anyone else as a result of using this knife." -- something like that.

It also helps to make a knife with many purposes. Not just an offensive weapon..

Folks are just not reading what's being written and shown I guess. I agree this is a troll and also step out of the thread, sorry for letting go so far. If anyone reads this and hasn't read the whole thread, go back and do so before posting. It's hard to take a position in favor of the OP.

read the rest of the thread first...

mmmmm.... ok... I better do so then!... looks like a task though..

ok got through it... Sorry for not reading full post previously. My bad. Judging by the thread starter's later post regarding making weapons and guns etc, I would say he is trying to elicit a response from people (maybe this is what trolling means?) If he is genuine, then he seems to have a twisted view of the world.

Where most other people here consider themselves knifemakers and knifeartists, he seems to see himself as a murder weapon maker. Worlds apart.

I too am out of this thread and wont look back at further posts.

They're around six inches long. I've been charging $5. They're stainless steel. They're not heat treated, I'm not even familiar with heat treating steel!

As for guns being the primary weapons of our society, I doubt very much that if you walk into a crowded bar anybody will have a gun, but several people will probably have knives. Many knives I've seen sold in stores, including those in the $50+ range, break during combat! I'm not saying any of the knives here do (although wood/bone handles tend to break in combat) and folding knives frequently break on the fold. At least my shivs don't break in combat.

To be on topic; I think that we've almost achieved a peaceful society. There is very little fear of violence when going about a persons' daily activities, especially if one is careful. Assault weapons, or tools that are designed to kill or cripple humans, are very rare. I hope to perfect my weapon crafting, and eventually craft weapons such as firearms, tanks, missiles, and hydrogen weapons systems. (Maybe not that last one :) ) Is it responsible of me to bring these things to the (black) market, knowing that in our peaceful society nobody has human-destroying tools? There was a stabbing recently in my home town, and the knife broke during the stabbing. Good thing that wasn't a good assault knife! On the other hand, weapons may be an important part of being human and thinning the herd? I'll think about it more carefully, especially if I ever progress to uncommon weapons that have the power to kill many humans in a short amount of time...
Think again I have a a springfield xd tactical 45acp strapped to my side which has not left my side for the last month.

I just looked at some of the other posts by aersixb9 and noticed that he/she posted a thread about Amtgard. I am an ex-amtgarder from way back. They are 95% kids under 20. Most switch over to the SCA after they turn 18 (SCA age limit to fight is 18, only 13 for Amtgard.) Also, in another post by aersixb9, he/she mentions that they don't have a car.

So I conclude that this person is a kid (13-17) that is probably selling these shanks to his friends and is looking for "permission" to continue to do so. I think they are looking for arguments to use against an authority figure in the event that they get caught. "...But the professionals on Blade Forums said it was a tool, so it is ok..."

aersixb9, If you are selling these "knives" to adults, then the responsibility for their use is on them. However, if you are selling them to kids, YOU are partly responsible for their misdeeds with them.

That's just what I think.

I have no control over a knife once it is sold to the customer. Yes there is a chance that the knife could be used in a negative manner (ie friday night beheadings). But in reallity, most knife crimes simply involve cheap knives and kitchen knives. Chainsaw manufacturers make saws for cutting wood, but inevitably some of them have been used for beheadings too.

I don't worry about it, I just concern myself with quality, workmanship, and customer service. What the customer does with it is his/her business.

I think the "9" at the end of his name refers to his age.

either that or the number of years he's spent in prison, because it looks like that's where he learned to make knives.

Isn't it just like someone to bring a knife to a gunfight. :D

You are an idiot aersixb9. If you don't want people to use them for crimes, maybe you shouldn't call them prison shanks like a dumbphuck in your other thread.

holy shiznit!

That thing is what we're looking at?

I got all heated up and ready to sink my teeth into a good, thick, juicy ethics debate over a twelve year old with a file and some scrap metal?

I feel so...

violated.
