anyone know if they make like a "stamp" thingy that will put a mark in wood, kind of like people do in kydex... actually whats the thing called that people use to hammer the symbols, or makers mark into sheaths and stuff? I cant word it right in google.

It's called a stamp. Brass ones for leather and wood seem to be just as if not more expensive than hardened steel ones for marking metal, last time I checked. The cheapest ones for marking leather are made of some sort of poly plastic material... I don't know how long that would last on wood. Woodworking places like Lee Valley will make you a stamp that can be heated to "brand" wood (possibly leather as well, I'm not sure), too. Standard stuff like monograms are pretty cheap; naturally, custom designs cost more.

ETA yay, page three!

WW - what are you wanting to do? It makes a difference for the answer.
there are stamps for wood (and leather), there are also branding irons that you heat up and burn a pattern into wood with.
if you're wanting to checker a handle, that's done with a checkering file.
other patterns are done using carving knives (chip carving uses a wharncliffe blade, fish scale uses a small gouge, etc...)

They work for wood too. Just don't pound it as hard.

There is a joke in there somewhere.

When you say "heated to brand" Do they burn the mark into the wood or "press" it, actually burning it in might be cooler

I want something that can put my avatar on my wooden handles.

check out lee valley, woodcraft, or rockler for a custom brand.
they make self headed (electric) or you heat it models.

does this mean that I'm cool?

I vote "yes".

Brand, like branding a cow. With hot metal. It involves burning and leaving a scorched mark. FFS man, look it up! I can't stay up all night and snark about explain all this stuff :D

That might be tricky. The less complicated/detailed the design, the better.
