So, yesterday I went to Radio Shack to pick up a bottle of PCB etchant. When I left the store I jumped in my Jeep and noticed a old man with a cane walking up to my vehicle obviously wanting to ask me something. Being the over cautious type I made sure my Glock was accessible and rolled my window down just enough to hear what he had to say. As he walked up he asked if he could have a minute of my time and immediately start his story. Seems he was down on his luck, homeless living in his car and his exact words where, "Im freezing and starving and if you can spare anything at all it would be greatly appreciated" So, I don't always believe what I hear and I don't know his real situation. Im all for being helpful to people in need but I sure as hell am not going to just hand this guy money. So. I had a thermos full of hot coffee I made right before I left the house that I hadn't taken the first sip from. I told him that and Id be willing to give it to him thermos and all so he would have something warm to drink. I picked it up and passed it to him throught the window only for him to say, "Well thanks, But I don't drink coffee" He turns around and looks at the China Buffet that's right next door to the Radio Shack I just came from and asked. "would you be willing to take me into the buffet and by me lunch. Now, Let it be known that my wife and I quite eating at that very restaurant because it was too expensive. A buffet for one person cost $15 bucks without a drink. So, knowing this, I tell the guy. "I'll tell you what I will do buddy, I will walk you over to the Subway (three doors down from the China Buffet) and I will buy you a $5. foot long sandwich and a drink."........His response. "I would rather have the buffet"...............I said. Well, Im starting to get the full picture of why your starving. Merry Christmas. Then I rolled up my window and drove off. What the hell are people thinking these days? how pathetic is that. a begger being a chooser.

I'll tell you why he might have wanted the buffet. And I am not suggesting that you should have gotten it for him, but I do know why some may want the buffets.

My wife has been in the restaurant business her entire working life. She has been working in a buffet for over 20 years now. She sees this behavior almost daily. Most of the homeless that come in to the buffets are there to gorge. They can sit there all day and eat almost nonstop. (some make you leave between lunch and dinner) They gorge because they do not know when they will get their next meal, so they stuff face for hours. Some of them apparently have a mental issues because they come in, eat until they can't move, then go to the restroom to blow chunks (purging) and come back to stuff face again. They will do this all day. How does the wife know they are blowing chunks... someone is usually in there and complains to management, or someone walks in after they come out and complains about the new wallpaper.

The last reason they like buffets is so that they can try and steal food to take home. This isn't just homeless people, but surprisingly quite a number of apparently regular ole' people too.

I also want to say that not ALL homeless people act this way, but these are some observations from within the industry. Its kind of sad, really.

TM- sounds like most of the homeless around here. I've offered to buy sandwiches, coffee, and even gloves and a hat. For my efforts, I've been cussed at told I wasn't a good Christian. I still do what I can for those that are polite and willing to accept what I have to offer but I don't let the rest bother me too much.
On another note, we've been without 'lectricity for over 2 full days and the power company's sayin' maybe today maybe tomorrow. Kinda makes me wish I'd spent some of my knife money on a generator.

Sucks about the lectricity! hope they get it fixed soon. Speaking of beggers, I had another time a couple of years ago, when a guy (obviously on hard times) walked up to me outside of a liquor store and asked me if I could spare some change. Then before I could answer he said. "and buddy, Im not gonna lie to you and give you a sob story. I just tell you strait up Im gonna use what money I gather to by a bottle of cheap wine" I was so impressed with his honesty, I took him inside and let him pick out the bottle he wanted, bought it and a bag of patato chips and a couple of slim Jims for him. That guy was so thankfull he would of walked out into traffic if I asked him to.

I understand what your saying and don't disagree. However, the way my simple mind works, is that I did in fact offer this guy a free meal and hot coffee and he turned it down. Irregaurdless of what his intentions where. He makes a pretty sh!tty homeless guy turning down free meals.

Well good on you for your generosity, Todd. Some people are just d-bags, and it's important to know that sometimes, being homeless is just what someone deserves for their behavior, attitude, and choices.

Todd, that sucks... If you're looking to give that thermos away though... :D

I honestly don't have the first problem helping someone that truly needs it or at least is appreciative about it. unfortunately, sometimes its hard to distinguish between that and somebody that's just worthless and trying to take advantage of you.

Todd,

oh yeah... i agree.. i simply offered one possible explanation as to what you and I think is illogical thinking...you offered some help.. he was choosy... the old adage is "Beggars can't be choosers"

While you were getting his shoes and coat you could have told him "Yeah old man, you could be sipping hot coffee right now with your cold cut trio but you got greedy."

Haha. He looked more like a Italian BMT type of guy. :D

I'd bet money he would have gone for the meatball, Todd you should go back and ask him!
(I actually do have a thermos, but you can never have too many thermos. They are the "9" of the coffee world.)

Any Robert Jordan fans in here? I'm working on a replica of Tam's heron mark sword right now. Currently trying to think about how to make the handle. It's supposed to be leather wrapped. I had initially thought I should go for a leather tsukamaki, but the heron menuki on the hilt is supposed to be exposed enough to brand Rand's hand. So maybe I should go for a more standard leather wrap? Also, how's this for a WOTD: nobby. It's used to describe leather, and the dictionary says it means fashionable or stylish. But wtf is a "nobby leather sword grip"?

Nailed it.

My pat answer is, "Sorry I don't have any cash on me." Most of the hard-luck stories are just stories. If I want to help the homeless, I'll work at a local charity (which I've done) or donate money to a non-profit (which I've done). This past October, I did have a homeless guy approach me, cash in hand, and ask if he could buy a blanket because the temps were about to plummet that night. We scrounged two blankets out of the car and gave them to him. If he played me, which might have been the case, at least he did so with respect. I, in turn, respected him.

Seem to be well made? I've seen mixed reviews.

My set looks well put-together. I like the size. The inner pot holds a 4 oz. canister and a $5 Chinese stove.
I need to get one of these IKEA caddies and make a hobo stove for the outside.

trade, here's a real page-turner about the homeless. I think you'd really enjoy it.

In the town I am from we had a few homeless people, and depending on the nature of the oil field we might have more. Since I was little there has always been one that has been around. We affectionately named him Smokey Joe. Smokey was an almost 7 foot tall black man who dressed like a 1970's pimp and walked around town with a strut that made him look like he was constantly listening to some James Brown song. We called him Smokey Joe because he would go from business to business and ask the very same question to everyone he saw, "Got some smokes?" I cannot tell you the countless times I gave or bought the man some smokes because to me he was not begging for money to shoot into his arm or anything, he just wanted a damn smoke. Pretty much everyone else around town that was not afraid of him would do the same. I bet that man has not purchased a single cig in the past 20+ years. To this day you can still find him jiggin and grooving around town falling asleep on the City Hall front lawn or just doin whatever he wants, because he is Smokey Joe.

Thats great, i seldom hand out money to beggers, im more likely to buy them a sandwich while im in the store than just hand out cash, but one time i seen a man holding a sign that said "why lie, I need beer" I stopped the car and gave him 5 bucks! Another time a guy asked me for a quarter and said he was hungry, i told him if he knew where to eat for a quarter let me know and id go with him to eat :) I did end up getting the man a burrito from the store, but did not give him a quarter. I know what its like to be homeless and hungry, and its not fun so i try and not judge. But im no idiot either and i know most the time the money is used for drugs/booze. Even when i was starving i never begged for a thing, i was too proud, i remember asking a man that owned a bakery if i could clean the place for a small loaf of bread, he gave it to me for free and told me just to take it and enjoy it. I cleaned his parking lot and swept his sidewalk anyway because i didnt feel right taking the handout even though i hadnt eaten anything but foraged plants for the last 3 days. A lot of people who judge the homeless have never been in a real struggle, never went to sleep hungry, never had to make a shelter just to keep out the weather. Most the time they are people with money, grew up with money and believe they have had it "rough" too but their definition of "rough" is having to pay the insurance on their graduation gift, a brand new car

I know one thing. Completely hypothetical of course, but if you let an eye-watering fart in the checkout line at Hobby Lobby, you can scowl at your children and deflect blame. Kids are really useful. Again... completely hypothetical.

So this one time I'm at the hardware store with my buddy who needs some nuts and bolts for his old Dodge M-37 truck he was restoring. He's digging through the little bins and I let out a silent fart that could have choked a dog. Right then another customer turns down the isle and there is no way this guy isn't about to get a nose full of the horror I just unleashed. So I shoot my buddy a dirty look and just barely loud enough for the other guy to here I say "Oh, dude!" like he had done it and walked away.

Another time the same guy and I stopped at a gas station on the side of the highway and I went in to take a dump. They only had one bathroom for everybody and there was a bit of a line. Anyway I get in there and I tear it up something awful. I open the door to leave and sure enough a hot chick is waiting to use the can so I got out of there quick. I'm in the car and my buddy comes out and he tells me "So I'm waiting to use the bathroom and this hot chick comes out and looks at me kinda embarrassed and just says 'it wasn't me' and walks away." I'm laughing so hard I'm red in the face and he just wondering what I think is so hilarious.

I had to fight the wife this morning to get my competition knife back from her LMAO. When i got the knife in and opened it up my wife said... Thats UGLY, i just laughed. This morning i was chopping some wood for the fun of it and i said here baby, you try and chop this piece of wood yourself, I sat a piece of wood on a chopping block, not a large piece but not something real small either, she grabbed the knife and sailed thru the wood in 3 or 4 chops, she was smiling the entire time :D Then i handed her the RTAK 2 and asked her to try that again.. she stopped chopping after about 6 or 7 chops and was only half way thru the wood, then she asked to use the Keffeler again and she herself chopped thru several pieces of wood just smiling the entire time. So i asked her when she finished.. Is it still "ugly" ??? and she said "yea its ugly but it works better than all your other knives, and i love the handle" then I smiled! The RTAK2 is a great chopper, but nothing compared to the Keffeler. It is indeed one hell of a knife, it surprises me with each chop I take, and even at almost 2 pounds i can cut with detail thanks to the way the handle is positioned. cutting rope, paper, even shaving hair is easy with this thing. Im in love :D
