It blows that people would back out of a deal like that.

On the other hand, I doubt you would have much issue getting a sale if you put them up in the exchange or your forum.
 
On a completely different note, if any of you folks were considering getting a Blind Horse Knife, now would be the time.

Yeqh, I just read about L.T. and Dan splitting up. Apparently they're still going to make blades, just separately.

I keep thinking about getting a custom. I hadn't even thought about the idea of paying when the blade was about to be sent out instead of when I make the request.

I hear ya, brother. I've had a few deals go South myself; it sucks to be sitting there with several hundred dollars' worth of materials tied up and no one to pay for it (never mind the labor). I think some folks look at custom knives as a luxury item they can just take or leave on a whim, and forget that someone had to pay for all that steel and stuff up front.

I don't like messing with deposits either, but sometimes there's just no choice. When I do ask for 'em, they are always non-refundable. That tends to weed out the looky-loo's and keep people "honest". It's still a pain to keep track of, though.

There's a reason so many guys stop taking orders altogether... and just make what they bloody well feel like and put 'em up for sale when they're ready.
 
That's some seriously stupid s*%$. I don't think a material fee / deposit is unreasonable. By the letter of the law, asking for a custom knife to be built and agreeing to the specs is a contractual obligation, whether or not there was anything physically signed.

I haven't contracted a full custom anything yet. The customs I have bought (knives and flashlights) were pre-made and I selected the one I wanted, or pre-ordered from a list of available options. In the first instance, no deposit was expected since the makers had them "on the shelf." In the second, I have pre-paid the full amount prior to work beginning. I also waited 3 months for 1 and over a year for another to be delivered.
Considering the above, I do not think a deposit is at all unreasonable when contracting custom work. You need to at least cover the cost of materials to get started.

Frankly, I'm not sure a flower shop would be much better this time of year.

Or, just be upfront and tell them you require a non-refundable (and be clear: NON-REFUNDABLE) deposit because it is custom knife and you're not LL Bean. I would also let them know how long it's gonna take, be it 4 weeks or 6. The people who want one and admire your work should have no problem with that, and the ones on the fence will have something to think about before they waste your time. You wouldn't have quite so much on your plate; what you did have at least you would know, without doubt, would be worth your effort. I sincerely doubt any person serious about having a one-of-a-kind item of any kind would have a problem with that. If they do, then you probably don't want to work for them anyways. I would hate to see you stop doing something that you've obviously put a lot of time & effort into learning and becoming skilfull at or stop making knives that a lot of people here use and love. My 2¢.

I have several different ways I accept payment, all products of necessity, I honestly try my hardest to make it as painless as possible. MANY knifemakers will tell you that deposits are evil, and I agree to a extent. I do not require them on anything I make a lot of as long as I can sell it if the buyer backs out, However, If you want I Love Murphy or any other dumbsh!t like that engraved in it your going to pay the whole bill up front. Outside of that the only time I may require a deposit is on a high end piece where materials are expensive, everything else I leave totally up to the customer, some like to pay all right off the bat, some pay as they go, some pay when complete, and some don't pay at all. This is just the worse time of the year for it. Peoples eyes are biggest around Christmas but there wallets are smaller. Its all part of it, I should be a little more gracefull about it and learn to keep my mouth shut but 4 in one day is enough to piss the best of them off. I understand people get low on cash, hell, Im not exempt from that myself, and heres a big part of the reason. I'll be O.K. Don't mean to be a whinny bitch, just needed to vent.

I do feel very fortunate that I don't really have problems selling my knives even if it may not be exactly when I want. I have a lot of you guys to thank for that. As far as members here on BF, I cant say I never had problems But, honestly these 4 today where all orders from the ol interweb. Even if they where however, I have a real problem with name dragging. I know that GBU is for that, But I hate to make a bad situation worse. Nobodies ever bitched about me on there (at least not to my knowledge) Id hate to resort to tattle telling. Id much rather just knock on there door and .....talk....... about it man to man....or woman. Usually, if I got a problem with someone I don't make it a secret to them. I guess I expect the same courtesy from them.

Deposits are tricky things so I seldom require them. I litterally have 30 knives on my bench to sent out in the next 3 weeks. most of them are complete. Ive started sending out emails to the customers. so far today Ive recieved 4 emails back saying they no longer want the knives. (or no longer wish to pay for them if the truth was known) However, I guess that is the nicer thing to do considering I got 5 other people that dont even have enough consideration to return my emails. In the meantime, I got people that dont realize there is a lead time on custom knives have been bugging me for Christmas gifts, but I cant sell the ones I have because I dont know which ones Im gonna get stiffed on! Christmas SUCKS! I got stiffed on about 12 knives this time last year, so far, if this keeps up, its gonna be twice that this year. Crap like this makes me want to light a match, throw it in the shop and walk away!..................Maybe I'll start a flower shop.

That sucks man.. some people have no consideration for other's time..

Just got some more ways to make fire. Some buddies at work gave me a good sized bag of flint so I got a striker to go with it. New in the mail today is the fire piston. I have wanted one of these for a while now. Haven't had a chance to mess with it but the construction seems solid. Now I have to char the lamp wick and some old cotton tee shirts. Then I get to play!

Ive often thought of stopping taking orders, and honestly it would make my life MUCH easier. The problem is dealing with my conscience knowing that I punished the good customers for the acts of a few stupid douche nozzles!

He earned himself a customer with me for as long as i need sheaths, His work is not all thats excellent, he really goes out of his way to take care of his customers!!

Haha, Thanks for the laugh. If I could grow bacon flowers I would of died of a heart attack years ago, Here's a little known fact about me that you guys probably don't know, (give you a little giggle at my expense) But I in fact do love growing flowers. This summer wasn't so good but the wife and I usually put out a pretty large $$$$ amount of flowers each year. I really enjoy it, Murph gives me sh!t about it all of the time, but I really don't care, Im not ashamed. :p

Wow Dubs! On the 2nd one from the left, what is that spacer for?

Just adds a lanyard to it. You can buy them. That piston didn't come with a lanyard, so I bought a lanyard ring for it.
