About the guy in the black battle kilt I presume?...
He says it's "a guy in town" but as we all know, he's the guy! You should see the pictures though! Great bush!

Just picked this up at Northwest Adventure in Portland today. I had to.....I just had to.

Nothing at all wrong with the Mora. I gave one to each of my cousin's kids (with the parent's ((dad's)) permission) and I also got one for my uncle and cousin. We all love them!

Sorry to have bugged ya the other day Todd. I was just jonsing for some steel so figured I would double check before buying something. Glad I shan't be considered one of those 4.

What you might want to consider is for someone from BF you don't require a deposit (we're knife knuts, we understand the quality and time that goes into it) but for the regular interwebz folks requiring some sort of deposit or even payment up front. It probably isn't a good idea, but it's an idea nonetheless. Sorry you got stiffed like that, but I'm sure you can sell them no worries. (I think that was how I picked up that green wharncliffe from you actually)

You don't bother me Cbear. You and I know each other well enough to be beyond that, And Yes, That green warnie you got was a result of me getting the green weenie :grumpy: But, it all works out in the end, and it will this time too, just frustrating. I should of learned from last year and made different provisions.

Thanks guys. It was quite a party.

That guy was great in True Grit.... "Are either of you in need of medical attention?"

Well I gotta vent/bitch. I think next year Im gonna stop making knives altogether from October thur December. Everybody wants a knife for Christmas. So they order one. Deposits are tricky things so I seldom require them. I litterally have 30 knives on my bench to sent out in the next 3 weeks. most of them are complete. Ive started sending out emails to the customers. so far today Ive recieved 4 emails back saying they no longer want the knives. (or no longer wish to pay for them if the truth was known) However, I guess that is the nicer thing to do considering I got 5 other people that dont even have enough consideration to return my emails. In the meantime, I got people that dont realize there is a lead time on custom knives have been bugging me for Christmas gifts, but I cant sell the ones I have because I dont know which ones Im gonna get stiffed on! Christmas SUCKS! I got stiffed on about 12 knives this time last year, so far, if this keeps up, its gonna be twice that this year. Crap like this makes me want to light a match, throw it in the shop and walk away!..................Maybe I'll start a flower shop.

People that back out of knife deals should be blacklisted by all makers, custom or otherwise.
If you can't keep your word, you shouldn't order a knife. It's that simple.

Todd, you should let them know they have a week to respond to the original emails, or you're selling the knives.
You might indicate that your knives are in demand, and you cannot hold knives for people who do not communicate or who do not pay their bills.

My two cents anyway.

Just got a couple off the exchange (and a Fiskars hatchet) for my girls for christmas, from the same gent selling the RTAK. When I opened up the package, I found that he had shipped me a surprise: a "classic" wood handled Mora with a note "hoping that (I) would have a use for it". Very nice surprise! I've got a Swedish friend who has a 11 year old son who will be getting that for christmas, maybe all of them with homemade kydex if I feel well enough to spend some time in the basement. More than I expected, to say the least. I love those Moras. Inexpensive, capable knives.

As for the folks who backed out? I would let them know (politely) that they should not bother ordering another knife without paying in full up front.

yech on holiday sales, Todd.
You're way outta my league, but I've told people that I'll promise nothing by any date. Then I only take orders against my current models, no full-custom work that would be hard to move later. I've had two customers run out of cash for whatever reasons when the knife was ready, and in both cases they were easy to sell here. (CBear's again a beneficiary!) With a long and unpredictable lead time, it's hard to demand a commitment if I can't make one either. In fact, perhaps the secondary business model is to sell stiffed knives to CBear! :D

back on the ship this week in port for clean-out. fun fun. not.
BUT They have that Pennsylvanian beer here, so I had one out of Beckerhead solidarity.

consider them a start on your Blade Show stock?

a maker I know of: on repeat customers sends out an email at the beginning of the month he will be making a customer's knife -- if they don't respond within a week, the order is dropped; on new customers he sends an email stating "I will start making your knife in 2 weeks - I need X% up front before I start and if I don't hear back from you within 5 days, I'll consider the order canceled". He also requires payment up front for exotic materials (like the slab of 6" plate stock he needs to cut out a custom hawk)

as well... i think Todd should give me a cyber tuesday deal :) heh, i mean:

it's esp ironic in some maker/buyer interactions where someone begs you to make or sell something, get a special deal, or rate, or something... and then backs out, doesn't say why...

then you find out they just dropped all of "your money" on something else, or many other things - they HAVE the money. they just didn't do anything about it. gah.

but wait, they come knocking again. guess what? they're likely to flake out. again.

simple rule i have from many craftspeople: for things that someone needs to reserve, but are not special, easy to sell: they don't have to necessarily deposit, but they have to be ready to pay on DATE... otherwise, the deposit is up front, modest, but seriously enough, non-refundable, and if anything EXTRA (rare wood, special steel), they pay up front for that too so materials can be purchased now, not later ... for the maker, they REALLY should buy the materials at the cost stated - there are a few guys that wait and wait, then say to the buyer "oh, sorry, but in the last 3-4 weeks cocacolawood went up 50%, and i already spent your deposit, so, you know, need more money (and repeat: oh, those bolsters had to be machined by hand, took twice as long, more $$$) - no. that's the maker's problem... the price is the price is the price... :D

bottom line: make a deal, both sides stick to it. on time payments. on time delivery. no surprises!

public shaming is good too. hopefully, no Beckerhead engages in antics. remember: your good standing is required!

It sure is. I'm not in a position to blacklist anyone, and I don't feel compelled to shame anyone... but a certain someone will certainly not be getting the BH rate/discount again. I'll be happy to do business with him at full retail price, of course.

Sometimes when I decide or tell somebody I'll buy something, and change my mind I'll buy it anyway, even if I know I might never use it. I sure as hell hate when that happens to me so I try not to do it to others.
