The Hinderer bug

Feel sorry for all the people who paid crazy prices on the Hinderer stuff a couple years ago and now the knives are worth half or less. I understand knives generally are not a good investment but yikes thats a hard pill to swallow.

I went through that phase. First the butterfly then the spyder. Got a 0560 them 0562 followed by 4 hinderer xm18. Had full titanium scale on a spanto. A slicer with a rek regrind-blue titanium hardware-blue/black g10 scale. Then i realized i hit my plateau.

This thread was started at the exact rite time, I just ordered my first hinderer after dabbling in the ZT collaborations for years. The ZT 0562 was my first introduction to hinderer design and it has been all smooth since then. I got a 0393 all of 2 weeks and decided then to get an XM18 as the designs are working so well. Now I wait patiently for the XM18 to get to the bottom side of the world. Glad to see many others go through the same progression.

I went through a Hinderer phase and owned 4 of his knives. The 0562 was what got me into them. I like Rick's designs a lot but I don't care for how thick behind the edge they typically are (sheepsfoot was the best that I owned). The other thing I will say is that Hinderer does not always hold their value well. I practically gave away the slipjoint that I had. Luckily I had bought it LNIB from another member rather than new so I didn't really lose much.

Guys that buy second hand like me love that. I typically buy CRK new and RHK used.
What do you not like about the insert?

Its really a preference thing.

-I prefer less parts as a general rule
-I prefer the slight stick from titanium and how it forms to a blade tang over time. The steel insert engages a bit harsh at just the edge of the steel and never seems to wear in very well.

In real world use. Might not make a difference. I could deal with it. But I cannot deal with bearings.

Either way. I love the knives and I am so pumped for my Spear point Gen 4 to arrive.

Got the bug bad too. Full Track on the way and trying to decide color combo on Gen6 XM18 3.5.
They are not cheap knives. I hate buying a knife knowing I need to buy the $100 scale with it and the scale it came with just sits. That $100 could buy another knife.

I would love to own (and keep) at least one Hinderer. Have bought several and always something about each just not right. For me anyway. XM18 of some kind would be ez choice if were not for that flipper tab. Hate hate hate that forward leaning tab. Full track to big, half track to expensive for what it is imo, and the MP1 does not appear to be getting the triway, steel upgrade, and lockbar insert upgrades- if it did I think that would be the one.

I keep watching the new designs and hope, some day, to get bit and infected by the Hinderer bug.

I am waiting for an XM-18 3.5 gen 6 spanto full working finish to be available somewhere to pick up one ;)

As I use my half track spanto, this blade shape has seriously grown on me :)

It is amazing to see the difference between the hinderer spanto and the interprétation by ZT on the 0393.
I like both for different reasons but the hinderer spanto is really doing the job for me

Anybody have Battle Blue ano on their Hind?
Is it more of a darker blue? Any pictures of a well-fingerprinted/greased back?
I’m literally between Battle Blue and Working Finish on my choice.
Color ano’s great until you handle it, then it just looks gray/dull/blotchy.
I guess Battle Blue’s no different?

The Hinderer Bug transmits a terrible, terrible chronic disease that is very expensive to treat. I think @whitty breeds the bloody things....

G4 3.5 XM-18 Bowie
G4 3.5 XM-18 Slicer Non-Flipper
G4 3.5 XM-18 Spanto Non-Flipper

G2 Half-track Spanto
G1 Full-Track

G1 Slippy Slicer

I'll try and post a picture later tonight

Yikes!!! But in a good way. : )

Still have my first XM18, and more than a few others to keep it company. I will probably sell a few soon to eliminate some redundancy.

I only have 1 "real" Hinderer -- a Gen 6 XM-18 3.0 that I bought off of the Exchange. Nice knife but really too small for me and too expensive IMO for what you get.

I also have many of the ZT/Hinderer variations -- a 0550, 0551, 0560, 0562 and 0566 -- and actually prefer them to the XM-18 based on the quality of construction, functionality and lower cost. And, I also have many of the Kershaw/Hinderer variations -- a G10 Cryo I, Ti Cryo II, Shield, Ferrite, Agile and Thermite -- which look/function far better than their low cost pricing would suggest.

So, while I won't rule out buying another Hinderer (whether original or a collaboration), these 12 Hinderers are enough for me for now.

They are worse than bed bugs

I'm about to buy my first Hinderer. I'm really a CRK guy and love love love my small inkosi. Everything Hinderer is way to big but the Half Track seems like a good compromise for EDC. I'd love it if ZT would make the XM 3" cause the 0566 just begs for Ti and ball bearing action.

My gen 4 spearpoint XM 18 is my absolute favorite knife, over my umnumzaan (very close 2nd), sng, and others. Maybe that will change, but it was my first step into higher end knives and ive owned a XM Bowie blade and gen 2 Eklipse before as well. Hinderer makes great knives, will always support his company.

There’s something different about knifes like CRK and RHK.. unlike many others their main design doesn’t change much over so many years.. it only means they had truely believe in their knife design philosophy. The 21s and XMs has been around for years! And I really do respect that in a maker.
Companies like Benchmade and Spyderco has got many many design that surely can appeal to most, sometimes I do see an interesting knife that I want, but nothing much beats holding/using a CRK or a RHK imo..
