The history of the schrade 8ot from 1960 to the 2004 anniversary knives.

I found this 8OT on eBay; Note the match-strike pull, it is not as well formed as the later 8OTs.
My 1960 saw-cut bone handled 8OT has the same lightly stamped match-strike pull.

This is another 8OT listed on eBay as a "1963 Schrade Old Timer"

Nice to see the 8OT's receiving a little appreciation here, and you guys have some really nice ones. :)
I have one very similar to this one posted by Ken, but I think the nail nick is a bit shorter, and is not as nice. The text on the main blade is the same too. It also has carbon spots on it as a lot of 1095 from that era does.
This is a mid-1980’s 8OT.

This is two 8OTs I have never see before.
The Black knife has the same match-strike pull as the first 1960-62 Saw-cut Bone handled Old Timers.
The other knife has smooth Red Bone handles like the 1980s 3 knife set. However, the blade and shield are both different.

Hi Ken, I forgot to comment on how nice that set above is, and it's good to have the Buck in there for comparison. :)
An other 8OT for my collection.
This one is interesting, and it would seem to have had someones special finishing touch. Herman Williams maybe? I know you are teasing us by only showing the back. ;)

That 8OT has just been to Dale Vincent's and is now on its' way to me, I will post more photos when I fit the shield into the bone.
The Black 8OT, I think is an early 1960's Old Timer (match-strike is the same as my 1960 bone 8OT) It's owned buy a New Zealander.
As for the Bucks, I only collect Schrade knives and always like to show my Bucks made by Schrade from 1966 to close to 1970.

Great bunch of stockmen in here! I surprisingly received a 8OT in a bundle of knives from the bay. It was rusted shut and well worn. After cleaning the red rust up and oiling the joints like crazy it turned out to be a very good user. Unfortunately, the main blade is very very well worn. I really like the ~4" carbon steel stockmen and the 8OT is a great no nonsense version of old

Fantastic knives Ken.

Ballenxj - the set you mentioned are mine and you are correct- the Red Bone is Herman Williams- the Red Bone is not rough saw cut like Schrades- but Hermans touch.
The Buck is a first run contracted to SCHRADE. All three knives are early 1960's.

Your Buck is not The first run knife Schrade made, this is their first Buck.
If your buck is not stamped Buck on all of the blades it's the second run knife.
And if it dose have buck stamped on all of the blades it is the third run of Knives.
I would like to know more about the black knife, and if you would like to find a new home for it - I would like to buy it... Ken.

Thanks, with all these posts, and quotes of posts it's a bit difficult sometimes to keep track of who is who. ;)

Hi Ken
Thank you for putting me right, the knife DOES have Buck stamped on all three blades - as you see stamped on the main, and on each of the secondary blades behind - they have stamped only - BUCK . So it is from the 3rd run.Thank you for that Ken.
I cant tell you much more about the Black OT than what you already know, it was bought from a very respected Schrade Collector - and he told me about them, he did tell me the Buck was from the same era as the Black OT- this may have been approximately.
Most probably he told me this Buck being one of the first runs from Schrade for Buck.

The Bucks were made in the last four years of the 1960's; then Camillus started to make them.
The first run or two Camillus 301 Bucks, had a different main blade - and still three rivets in the handle, like you Schrade.
The rivets are smaller, and Camillus changed over to one rivet.
I still fell your Black Schrade knife is Pre: 1964 or 65...
I jump on any Pre 1970 4" knife, made by Schrade I can find, and those Buck 301s are very hard to find...Ken.
