Thanks Pokey and Busse Crew....What a Line Up...:D

Finally...Has been a real pleasure beeing with you guys on this journey- Thanks all!!!

When it comes to this thread i have one wish; would be awesome if it could live on, not just to honor the Basic-8, but as a Basic Thread in generell - Basics rules!!!

BRING IT!!!!!!!!

I agree, this thread is BASICALLY AWESOME...

Let's keep it going with a Basic 18 Chant!:thumbup::D:thumbup::D:thumbup::D:thumbup::D

Heck, all we need to do is edit some pics and add a "1" in font of all the "8's" and a "een" after all the eight's.;););)

This is sooooooooooo awesome!!!!
A chance for this piglet to FINALLY get his claws on some Basic goodness direct from Busse!!!
With any luck, one of each handle color for me please! OINK!! :pig:

I'd like to add my "Thank You!" to everyone who posted here and kept the thread at the top of the forum for over a year!!!! You ROCK!!!!
What an amazing ride it's been!!!!! :D

How thick is your B10? I asked RG the same Q last night and he said his was .205 and full flat, which would make the B8 beefier in both thickness and grind.

Were there variations with the B10?

Hey Resin... Are you going to get one of these B8's? I was playing with my B10 (W/ choil) all evening and the blade on the B8 is going to be thinner and shorter, so I think it's going to be really REALLY light in the hand. I have a SBR, BR, Battle Guard, Dogfather, Euro-6 and 2 B10's and I can't believe I'm even saying this after all the fun we've had on this thread, but I'm on the fence. If it was thinner (.187" or less), I'd have snagged one for the kitchen and you already know I've been jonesin' for a .275" INFI SOD/Camp Tramp with some serious unbreakable blade heft (actually, I think it would feel just about like a SBR).:D

If I didn't have the above blades, I'd order one of each (at least) and at the .22 thickness, they'll make a great lightweight camp knife.

WOW, I can't believe I just typed that, but after fondling the "PERFECT 10 of the blade world" tonight, I may sit this one out and see if a HOG B8 gets offered from the store... I'm covered well in the INFI/Res-C department with the Euro-6 and B10's.

Buuuuuut, Who knows what I'll do on Tuesday though... I already have the email typed out and ready to go (with more than just the B8 on the list).

Good points. The ASH1 LE @ .22" thick and the ASH1 Skinny @ 3/16" weighed virtually the same because of a full flat grind on the LE and convex primary grind on the Skinny. Stump Buster you may be surprised at how substantial this B8 is in hand.

Only variations I know of on the B10 were choil/no choil, BTW. Wish that option was available on the B8, but I'm very happy with the specs other than that.

Hey 360,

The Basic 10 was .230"... Here's the original announcement...

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...t-Basic-10-LE-Special-Pricing-and-Specs-YOWZA!!!!

The B8 is .220" (a little thinner than the 10, but not my much). Like Will said, I think the only variants of the B10 were choiled and choiless. I have one each and they appear to be the same thickness. My choiless was a show special in DCBB, so I'm not sure if it's any different from the satin choiless offerings.

I hope I'm not coming across as Anti-B8.... especially after all the posts we've had on this thread, just the opposite, I'm STOKED the B8 is finally here and I'm hoping this is just the first LIMITED run of the 8's and a few CG variants will be available again for order like the originals.

It's hard to type "voice inflection" into posts sometimes, so please read my posts in a light hearted tone.

As Always... BRING ON THE EIGHT!!!!(and please scatter some HOG B8 and DIET B8 for the masses too):D

I'm actually super optimistic about this knife. My FSH was 0.235" and full convex and it felt beefy in the hand. Even with the FSH handle, it was a very blade-forward balanced blade and I loved it. The B8, being only .015 thinner, but with the resiprene handle should give pretty similar ergos.

And when I consider thickness versus prying, I still have to think about this old video that I made with a 0.187" howling rat. :D

Re-reading 360j's earlier post, I think you're talking variations in thickness--random variations? Wouldn't be surprisee--not unusual to see a couple thousandths difference across a Busse production run. A nominal .22 could run from just above .20 to .23+.

And then there's Noss' D-test of the Skinny ASH1...

Yes, I'm getting the Basic 8 LE. My guess is that Jerry will make as many as we order in this configuration, and there is no way of knowing, nor expecting, any future variants.

SB, have you measured the thickess of your B10s? In another thread last night, someone put up a link to the B10 announcement:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...t-Basic-10-LE-Special-Pricing-and-Specs-YOWZA!!!!

The thickness is given as "Approx. .23", and my choilless one is not that thick. But what really drew my attention is the pics of the two versions. The choiled one has a wider blade than the choilless. The difference is real using a ruler laid on the monitor screen. So I wonder if anyone has both, what is the width in reality? 'Ganza pics don't always match what gets delivered later. So if the B10 w/choil is wider, then it has more weight out front.

I think SB needs to send me his B10 for an extended test session vs. mine. 6 months should be enough.

As posted somewhere else, it's not always so much thick vs thin for me, as much as how the total package feels for the tasks. (Except small knives. They need to be thin for slicing. Remember kids, what Cliff Stamp taught us: geometry cuts.)

After Troy pinged me last night, I was swinging my choilless B10 and SBR around (fortunately, no bourbon was involved), measuring dimensions and checking the balance point. The SBR is shorter, but with a broader blade at the same thickness. These two do feel more similar than I had recalled. I may have to delay my intention to sell the B10 (the resale market for these sucks anyway), track down a beater B9, take some nice Basic family pics, and do some more testing. Having this large chopper collection is kind of silly, there's nothing here to chop.

So, I remain optimistic that with four years development time, Jerry and Co. have dialed in a Basic 8 that feels right. Come spring, I will gather up my eight inchers and go find some trees.

Hi Stumpy,

I don't read discontent in your inflection at all. No worries.
I also hope that a slightly thicker CG blade is offered at some point.

What I had hoped to bring up is that Resinguy's B10 was MUCH THINNER than .230" and your description of the B10 was surprising to me. I had ruled out getting a B10 because of how dainty I had believed it was. (really, even at .230" and full flat, it's probably a bit on the nimble side for what I'd want).

The full convex means EVERYTHING to me with this blade being 0.22". The difference in beefiness between full flat and convex is massive.

Not sure I agree. In the old days, with lots of hand work, yes. It seems like no two SHBM were alike. Now, with every blade being carved and ground on a mill, they almost have to be identical for the CNC programming to even work.

Dunno--I'm sure you're right as far as the blanks go, but as recently as the NMFBM CG at a nominal .25", I had individual blades from about .24" up to almost .26".

I do believe that variation still exists, primarily due to pits and deformities within the bar stock that would need to be taken down. RG, your uber thin B10 may be an oddity.

Also, wasn't the satin battle rat supposed to be .25" thick? This also surprises me that this knife is similar thinness to your B10. I may be wrong on that one.

Was your FSH from the original run? Was it ridiculously thick just behind the edge? I picked up an old user years ago, and it had a stupid thick geometry behind the edge. All that 'excess' metal could explain that beefy feeling. Ban transformed it for me:

I suppose I should just use it. It's not like you can sell a old modded knife.

I was under the impression that all the original run FSH's were full flat. I'm not sure when this full convex one was released.

I expect that it was thick at the edge like yours, but before I bought it, Ban had performed his set of miracles on thinning down the edge. :D

I agree. I was baffled that folks avoided mine like the plague. Practically gave it away. People just don't know perfection when they see it. :D

There were some threads years ago as to whether FSH were flat or convex. Some folks swore they laid a straight edge on the balde and it was definitely slightly convex. IIRC, the issue was never settled.

Man, I would have grabbed both your knives if I could have. Love the river8 butt job; someday...

I really like that "transformation"!
