I really like that "transformation"!
I REALLY like the .220 thickness!:thumbup::thumbup:
Not sure I agree. In the old days, with lots of hand work, yes. It seems like no two SHBM were alike. Now, with every blade being carved and ground on a mill, they almost have to be identical for the CNC programming to even work.
CNC programming is an exact science. The program says move the tool to "x co ordinate" the machine obliges... The variations come from tool wear. Its certainly not uncommon for a tool to leave a thou or two (.001-.002) or MORE material if it is at the end of its life.
Its also reasonable to conclude that if a tool is brand new, and the operator hadn't made an offset from the previous, worn tool, that it could take off extra material. Both have happened to me, at various shops.
That being said, I imagine a blade finished up with brand new tools, still "in print" would certainly not be scrapped.
Yes, I'm getting the Basic 8 LE. My guess is that Jerry will make as many as we order in this configuration, and there is no way of knowing, nor expecting, any future variants.
SB, have you measured the thickess of your B10s? In another thread last night, someone put up a link to the B10 announcement:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...t-Basic-10-LE-Special-Pricing-and-Specs-YOWZA!!!!
The thickness is given as "Approx. .23", and my choilless one is not that thick. But what really drew my attention is the pics of the two versions. The choiled one has a wider blade than the choilless. The difference is real using a ruler laid on the monitor screen. So I wonder if anyone has both, what is the width in reality? 'Ganza pics don't always match what gets delivered later. So if the B10 w/choil is wider, then it has more weight out front.
I think SB needs to send me his B10 for an extended test session vs. mine. 6 months should be enough.
As posted somewhere else, it's not always so much thick vs thin for me, as much as how the total package feels for the tasks. (Except small knives. They need to be thin for slicing. Remember kids, what Cliff Stamp taught us: geometry cuts.)
After Troy pinged me last night, I was swinging my choilless B10 and SBR around (fortunately, no bourbon was involved), measuring dimensions and checking the balance point. The SBR is shorter, but with a broader blade at the same thickness. These two do feel more similar than I had recalled. I may have to delay my intention to sell the B10 (the resale market for these sucks anyway), track down a beater B9, take some nice Basic family pics, and do some more testing. Having this large chopper collection is kind of silly, there's nothing here to chop.
So, I remain optimistic that with four years development time, Jerry and Co. have dialed in a Basic 8 that feels right. Come spring, I will gather up my eight inchers and go find some trees.
