Tell me, someone.... What makes them so great ? The name is "basic" after all.....
I can only give my rationale.
I find that the FSH a phenomenal field knife. Ample length, blade width and thickness. It's great for chopping, prying and batoning. It has gained status as the iconic Busse knife.
Now, imagine that same blade with 25% less weight pulling on your belt. With the lighter handle, the weight balance is also shifted forward to the blade so that it almost wants to chop just by sitting on the table.
The handle is the most comfortable and durable synthetic material I've seen on a knife. It's true that the FSH has a more durable, heavy-duty handle that will likely never require maintenance. That said, resiprene is no slouch. Hard chopping can be done even without wearing gloves as the handle itself absorbs the impact.
Finally, I'm not certain that I'd ever be able to replace my FSH if I lost it or got it stolen. Because of this, I don't always have it handy. With a basic 8, I could have a very similar knife in my truck at all times and not worry (too much) if I have to replace it.
Cost plays into this for me as well.
