Man. I don't have the time for 1/4 of that work. I can't wait to see what comes of it. You should post up a step by step tutorial showing the edge after each step for those of us who don't know when to quit.....

It really is a lot of work --- but having finished it last night and paying careful attention to detail --- I know with certainty that if I challenged someone to produce a sharper and more consistent refined edge --- it wouldn't be easily possible. Knowing that alone and seeing it whittle hair along the entire edge -- makes it all worth it.

I'll see if I can do a step by step with my FFBM. I'm dreading how long that will take -- especially since the shoulders are so thick.

So last night I finally got around to finishing up my Basic 8 L.E.

I decided on a 19 degree per side edge (38 degrees Inclusive). I did some reprofiling and then took this beauty up to a clean mirror polish. It whittles hair along the entire edge. This beauty is my new go to hiking companion. I have no doubt she'll hold up to anything reasonable I challenge her with.

It was a real pain trying to get good pictures -- the satin finish and light bouncing off made the pics less than ideal ---- but here's a few anyway

I'd be interested in knowing if there's a large difference in degrees of the steel just behind the edge bevel to the 19 degrees of your edge bevel. Does that make sense?

If you want to take some better pics without harsh reflections on the satin, just wait for an overcast day and take the pics outside with a neutral medium toned background. I know, probably a tall order with how sunny South California tends to be. Or you could try indirect lighting by placing it near a window just outside of direct sunlight.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the photo tips -- and yes Southern California is pretty nice & sunny (although we've had triple digit heat for way too many days over the last two weeks).

I would say that the angle behind the edge bevel has to be not much more obtuse than the edge bevel itself. If I had to guess -- I'd say maybe 21-22 degrees. The reason why I think that is because while stropping I noticed I was beginning to polish the area that you had ground with your low grit stone. I'd apply more hand palm pressure and tilt the strop so it made light contact with the area just behind the edge bevel.

Rob,

You must mean to say it's slightly less obtuse behind the edge bevel, it is not possible for it to be more obtuse behind the edge bevel unless the knife has a hollow primary grind. A convex primary grind sees a reduction in angle from edge to spine. Extrapolating, it must mean that it is around 16-17 degrees per side behind your edge bevel. Looks great btw, nice job!

Yes indeed -- my mistake -- yes hence the slight polishing that is happening as I apply palm pressure and slightly change the strop angle. (Assuming I understand you correctly). Thank you brother!

Wow --- so I've already started on the FFBM ---- this is going to take FOREVER. I'm reprofiling the edge from what looks like a 27 degree edge per side starting point --- down to a 19 degree per side edge angle --- this is by far going to be the lengthiest reprofiling by diamond stone I've ever done --- lord have mercy. Sorry for the derailment ---- B8 is great --- time for the 7.62 to be released!!

THANKS for keeping this alive guys!!!

Been working the Valley Fire and trying to keep looters from taking things from those who can't be home to protect them. These parasites are some of the lowest of the low in my book! I asked command to issue us tags so we could mount them on our hoods and and display them proudly as we left the hot zone, but the powers that be discarded the idea (for now).

So, now that today was covered by squadmates from out of the area and I've had some sleep and a day off, please allow me to say...

BRING ON THE BIG 7.62 SABER HOG 3-Oh-bEight!!!

You stay safe out there Stump, we'll keep OINKING for the BIG 7.62 Saber HOG 3-oh-bEight!!! OINK!!!! :pig:
