THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

A variation on the hollow handle concept.

DPx Gear HEFT 4 (Hostile Environment Field Tool)
DPx Gear HEFT 6
DPx Gear HEST (Hostile Environment Survival Tool)

First off, I actually really like these knives, and the ergonomics on the handles is fantastic IMO. But, as far as hollow handle "survival knives", not sure this is a great approach for a few reasons.

1. The small size of the compartment, you can get creative and get some stuff in there but not much.
2. The need for a separate tool to access the compartment. Screwdriver or small washer for the HEST, large screwdriver or 3mm allen wrench for the HEFT knives.
3. The time it takes to get into the compartment. Don't put any survival item you might need "in a hurry" in there.

Basically for field use, maybe a small backup fero rod, or for the smaller HEST, in urban settings, I've stashed a rolled up $20 and small list of emergency phone numbers.

Great thread with lots of great information!
Would any of you gentlemen know if the cap from a Chris reeve one piece knife will work on the Schrade one piece knives?

Id like to get a schrade and trade out the but cap for a Chris reeve cap that is knurled and not the hex shape.

Thanks!

Great looking knife and I fully Agree with you!! I just got my HANDMADE GREG WALL MISSION II KNIFE... And I just absolutely LOVE THAT KNIFE ALREADY!! It is made with an A2 tool steel blade!! Greg included the Black Leather Sheath as well... Except my sheath has the square pouch. Greg loaded that pouch with a very nice firestarter kit and few other things Including a little mini saw that works wonderfully well!!

And I still have the hollow handle for storing a few more survival items! I have already made up a plastic tube of survival items for it!

My HANDMADE ANDY WOOD RAMBO MISSION KNIFE is Awesome too!! I really Love both of these beauties!! I have Andy's HANDMADE FIRST BLOOD KNIFE too... I cannot hardly Wait to get the HANDMADE GREG WALL FIRST BLOOD KNIFE!! That one is NEXT ON MY LIST!!

THE GREG WALL MISSION II KNIFE was one of my CHRISTMAS GIFTS from my loving wonderful wife!! But I would of bought it myself Anyway!! She just wanted to buy it for me as a Christmas Gift!!

Hi, guys!

Excellent thread. I read it through a couple of times. I've loved hollow handle knives since I was a kid and saw First Blood (you know, the usual story).

I got this one (Sly II/ First Blood, 440C with brass guard and aluminium buttcap) from Greg Wall a few weeks ago but havent got a chance to use it yet. Greg was a pleasure to deal with and the knife and sheath feels really well made and strong.

Anyway, here's the pics:

Very beautiful.. A Wilson MOA is with no doubt in my wishlist for a long time...
Gaston, I don't know what is the hole near the guard..

Any chance someone here has a guard and/or a buttcap for a Carl Schlieper (or Bianchi Nighthawk) survival knife? I saw them for sale a few years back on an auction site, but didn't buy them when I had the chance.

Santa's been working late getting 1911 Combat Survivors ready to be shipped out for Christmas.

Just curious, it seems that the list of custom HH knife makers keeps shrinking as time goes on for various reasons (retirement, bankruptcy, even fraud in some cases).

I was just wondering, can someone either link me to or provide as much as possible an up to date and complete list on HH knife makers that are still active and taking orders?

I can think of two, Sam Wilson, the OP on this thread and a hack named Mark Knapp. I'm sure there are others, I'd ask Cricket Dave and TAH, those guys no some stuff about HHKs

Sam Wilson and Mark Knapp would be a great place to start. Also, in no particular order:

Randall Made Knives
Vaughn Neeley - Doubt he is taking orders, but his knives are fairly easy to come by on dealer websites and auction sites.
Bill Sanders
Martin Knives
Greg Wall
Andy Wood

There are probably more, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Thanks Gents, oh and Mr. Knapp I'd like to say I really like your innovative design, very clever indeed Sir.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever tried to make a model w/ the cross-cut saw teeth on the spine of the blade?

Yes I have, I have had requests for them before. I personally feel like the knife doesn't need them. It's heavy enough to chop through anything quicker than it might saw through.

Just curious, does anybody own the FOX Knives 699 Rambler HH survival knife? And if so, what do you think of it? Have you used it and if so, what's your opinion of the construction and blade steel? Anybody have pics of theirs?

Those are the ones I know of with adding Sam Wilson and Mark Knapp, unfortunatly since Newt Martin passed away no more new Martin hollow handles.

Just took my Martin MCE2 out for a while.

I wish I would have ordered a couple other knives from him before he passed. I really can’t find anything else like them now.
