The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

Cool an the gang.
So far so good with Jim at Hardford Engraving. Great communication and he's cleaned up my artwork nicely. Doing the custom selectors for me as well. Should hopefully be able to ok the proof this afternoon.

Well I don’t want to be left out, I better start another build [gets slapped in head by wife]. Thinking about an SPR or long range build. I forgot about that other stripped lower in the safe. :D

I went the easy route on my first AR - I got a Fulton Amory FAR-15 spec'ed out for squirrels here out West. I got it when they had a deep sale for under $1000 shipped :D
Match barrel, 1x12 twist, 2.25lbs two stage match trigger . . .

But I did buy a lower and plan to build that up to more of a HD type config. Shorter barrel, red dot, flashlight, etc. All the bells and whistles.

at least I have the wife's blessing for mine. :)

My wife just gave me as close as she'll ever get to an "OK" for the Colt. She said I should have bought it and not told her and she would have never known it was new. Guess where I'm going on Saturday - to pick up some Colt carbine goodness!

the most annoying thing about the NY laws isn't the no collapsible stock or no flash suppressors - it's that those laws indirectly make it difficult to build up an AR - it's hard to find uppers for sale that have a pinned brake or compensator on them.

lol, I have mentioned I was going to buy something as a method for seeing what kind of response the actual purchase will bring. Usually she doesn't much react and is cool with whatever I do. I just figure there is no "thing" I want so bad I am willing to have stress at home about it.

Look what this idiot picked up today - a Colt MT6400C - gotta love ban states

Thanks man. LONG term plans for this thing (I just bought a house and this was my last shebang for a while) in order of likelihood of purchase are: Sully Stock, Magpul MOE handguard with rail(s) for flashlight(s), Troy rear BUIS, Aimpoint, and maybe, just maybe an Aimpoint magnifier on a flip-flop mount. Right now the NYS Assembly is trying to make anything with a removable magazine or muzzle brake illegal.

Good stuff man. After I get mine, It'll be magpuled out too. In fact it will pretty much be a direct copy of Shottys.

Mine's gonna have (only have LPK as of now. Will get rest when I get a job!)

Upper:
BCM 16" BFH barrel
BCM BCG
BCM Gunfighter Mod4 Charging handle
Aimpoint H-1 / Larue Mount
Troy Backup Iron Sights

Lower:
Noveske Lower
Custom LPK (part of a group buy from local gun forum, lol. Got a pretty grey trigger)
Magpul CTR Stock
Magpul MOE Grip
ASAP Plate
MS3 (When they come out, lol)

After running a few training classes, gonna figure out what can help me run the gun better. I anticipate making the following upgrades (not necessarily in this order):

Larue/DD 9" Rail
Magpul AFG/Tangodown Grip
Flashlight w/ Mount
Redimag
BAD Lever

I hate you all. I'm gonna start my Build soon.

Wintermute: I'm also in NY and while generally up on gun laws, I've never looked into AR specific limitations. I don't mind an A2 stock, but whats the deal with muzzle rules and mag limits?

edit: the gf disapproves of this entire idea. Guess I'm going to have to order something today just to set the rules on this :)

Hey, I went to UB!

Here's a link to gun laws:

http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/#?st=NY

Click on New York and read the section on assault weapons. You are not allowed a flash suppressor. Muzzle brakes/recoil compensators must be permanently attached to the barrel. You are not allowed magazines over 10-round capacity unless they can be confirmed (by serial number) to have been manufactured before the AWB started (9/13/94).

I'm working on calming my wife right now. It's a matter of time and education. And a couple of trips to the range won't hurt.

I was thinking about going with an A2 stock, but on a gun with a 16" barrel it was explained to me that it really throws the balance off and that the A1's or Sully Stocks are a better fit. Don't know if it's a load of hooey or not. I'm not a big fan of the fixed "collapsible" stock, but it'll do for now.

Ya know, I'm not sure I like this thread. :D I have had a Bushy M4 for several years and have only been able to put a thousand or so rounds through it and now I'm being told that my rifle is barely mediocre. Hmmm. I've done some mods to it like a GGG forearm, a bcm charging handle, and a few pieces of Magpul furniture. So what would make it better without buying a new rifle or upper or lower. Would replacing the inner parts of the lower and upper with DD parts make it more 'reliable'. Or are there other things I could do. Also, does anyone have any advise on Smith Enterprises. I am getting ready to put a Smith Vortex Flash hider on it and was thinking about putting a Smith bolt carrier in it as well. Opinions please.

Thanks

Man NY laws blow a fat one. I will not be moving there. MA laws blow too. I think NH is the only state in the north east without crazy Libby gun laws.
