The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

Shotty! AWESOME! Thats the EXACT model I've had my eye on! Unfortunately, my fund is currently only at $400. MOE Furniture looks awesome too! I'm definitely looking at getting the grip and stock when I get mine. And I'm considering going the MOE hand guard route rather than the FF quad rail route. I'm not planning on reaching out past 300 yards or anything so I really dont think I need to spend the money for a FF rail system.

How tight does the MOE hand gaurd fit?

Where did you order your rails for the hand gaurd?

Shotty, that build looks sweet man. I’m pretty impressed with the MOE goodies. Waiting on the midlength hg to hit the shelves ahhhhh!

Keep the old furniture so you can duracoat it orange for the Mrs.’ AR build. :D

RMC, is that an Eotec 512? If so, how do you like it?

Its a 552.A65 http://www.eotech-inc.com/product.php?id=3&cat=1 and I love it. I like the EOTech's because (square shape is nice and lack of a long tube like some other red dots) it feels more like you just have a dot in the air because everything is so open. I've tested the hood pretty dang good on accident too...I set my AR on the high counter top and got my shirt caught on it and it went straight to the tile and landed EOTech first. I cringed when it hit the floor but I picked it up and it still worked fine. The only ill effect from the drop is that the hood bent a little bit, but thats only $20 something to replace it.

I've shot a few other companies and I just feel like I'm looking through a scope when shooting. Since a red dot it for fast target acquisition I think you should have a great field of view with it.

I may get a micro red dot because I think It will open up my field of view more.

That's a sweet set up bro!!! You'll be more than able to drop some zombies should the time come. That's pretty darn close lookin' to the set up that I ran in the Marine Corps on my M-4. I have to admit, I didn't read through the whole thread, have you picked up any goodies from LaRue Tactical?!?! They make some killer stuff as I'm sure you well know.
"Let the zombies hit the floor"

I've owned a Class III Colt AR-15...Sold it$$$$$. I built a Spikes Tactical, it's a semi auto and shoots great. Put rails on it for the extra's.

U guys see the Smith&Uwesson piston gun coming out. pretty much like the ruger except you can remove the whole piston for cleaning. I might consider one of those. this thread is interesting. I always thought that RRA made high quality stuff, but it seems that peoplw have been rating at middle of the pack at best. RRA is coming out with a piston set up too, looks pretty cool. not really an ar. it has a charging handle running down either side of the piston rather than in back. the only thing I see that i dont like is the lack of rail space on the factory handgaurd, and it is not readily apparent that an after market unit will fit. I cant see that they would produce a new design without provision for a full rail system. especially with all the other piston guns out there, ruger, S&W, Bushy, ect.

real nice lookin rifle shottie!! love how it came out man i just got a dd upper, and the thing just rocks! very well put together, and it mated to three different lowers nicely! well done bro! -fed

CORNFED!!

What's up brother.

Thanks man, yea, the DD stuff is freaking sweet.

I built my AR off of a CMMG lower. I loved their product and the price was one of the lowest I found. I also did a lot of research and found a fascinating thread on officer.com forums which was really broke down with details on things like chrome lined barrels, twist rates, M4 feed ramps, etcetera.

Thread link here...

I also decided early on that I wanted to run optics so I went with an A3 upper to allow for the use of an EOTech 557 with a 3X flip to side magnifier. One of the problems I have found with the EOtech's is the fact that for some people the reticle is crystal clear and for others it is constantly blurry. Unfortunately for me, I am on the blurry side. After speaking with EOTech I was told that since the little red dots that make up the image go on for eternity. Any stigmas or eye issues force the little red dots to blur for eternity. I would recommend looking through one before purchasing.

I'm not much for tacticool, so I don't run much more other than a Troy front and rear back up sights.

Don't get antsy and buy the first one you can afford. You are making a major purchase, and it is well worth the time invested to save that extra amount for a better gun. Instead of getting a so-so that may not show you how good the weapon system can perform, and one that runs the risk of having increased wear and parts breakage sooner, you'll have one that will serve you for a very long time in a variety of conditions.

I think you have some misconceptions...

You cannot have a field of view in a non-magnified optic. What you are seeing and think you like better is this HUGE TV-screen with thin edges of the hood. It's not like the Redfield/Tasco scopes that had a wider image. When you are properly focusing on a target/threat, it does not matter if you have an Aimpoint or EOTech... You don't see the outsides of the sight, only the dot and the target itself. It's a part of focusing your attention.

It makes a difference how close to your eye the optic is in regards to this as well. There is a "sweet spot" usually when it comes to mounting dots. Mount it too close to your eye, and you are likely to not see the outsides of the sight as much, but it will be slightly slower to acquire the dot. Mount the sight further forward on the receiver and you will see more of the outsides, but the dot will be faster to pick up.

What microdot are you looking at? They aren't going to be any different if you're thinking about Field of View.

Thanks RMC and Adaman, I've got a 512 on my list.

Eotechs have other issues as well that makes them not the best choice if this is something you depend on. If someone needs a dependable, durable optic, it is very very hard to beat an Aimpoint in a Larue mount.

If you plan on using the sight for a few years, you need to factor in the extra cost of the Aimpoint and mount along a couple of batteries. Then factor in the cheaper cost of the Eotech and ALL the batteries you WILL need to BUY during that time. You will equal or exceed the total cost of an Aimpoint. There is a HIGH LIKELIHOOD that you will be swapping batteries frequently... They say 1000 hours... I will call BS everytime, as those numbers did not come close to the ones I've had mounted and worked with.

The wife just gave me the go ahead to start my build. Given that I have no specialized tools, how difficult will assembly be Shotty? Do I need to purchase anything specific in the tool department? If so I may just buy a complete lowere firts and then save up for the complete upper.

I haven't even started yet but the Magpul Dynamics dvds have already made me a whore...now I just need the Dynamic Handgun dvds.
